Die-hard readers already know the first season of House of the Dragon took much of its inspiration from George RR Martin’s Targaryen history novel, Fire and Blood. After the first season of HBO’s first Game of Thrones spin-off introduced viewers to a brand new cast of cutthroat characters, writer and producer Sara Hess has teased more bloodshed to come in season two.

Warning – this article contains major spoilers for House of the Dragon.

A gruesome storyline from Martin’s prequel novel Fire and Blood is all but confirmed to feature in the second outing of House of the Dragon.

The first 10 episodes of HBO’s new spin-off concluded with Aegon (played by Tom Glynn-Carney) on the Iron Throne.

Shortly afterwards, Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) is devastated when an airborne battle with Aemond (Ewan Mitchell) ends with the death of Lucerys (Elliot Grihault) and his dragon Arrax.

Even after the carnage of season one, screenwriter Sara has since warned House of the Dragon’s follow-up could be even more violent.

What follows in Martin’s source material is a secret assassination attempt which culminates in one of the most traumatic moments in Game of Thrones history.

Shocked by her son’s sudden death, Rhaenyra sends two mercenaries, a butcher named Blood and a ratcatcher named Cheese, to seek vengeance against Aemond.

Rhaenyra’s uncle and lover Daemon also promises “a son for a son” in retaliation for Lucerys’ death.

Sara didn’t reveal whether or not the assassins will be successful, but readers already know Rhaenyra’s plot has a blood-curdling result.

“We are currently writing the finale of season two,” she teased in Variety. “I don’t think you will be disappointed.”

Fans have now been assured showrunner Ryan Condal and his team have already written what may be one of the most graphic scenes ever shown on TV.

Based on the Blood and Cheese storyline’s place in Fire and Blood, it’s speculated to take place in the early portion of the series’ second season.

As well as the show’s trademark violence, fans can also expect plenty of tension between the warring queens Rhaenyra and Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke).

“Olivia has told me she believes — and this is her headcanon,” Hess teased.

“That they at some point kissed or made out or had some kind of physical interaction that Alicent’s mother found out about and forbade.

“And that was Olivia’s head story, ‘Oh, I can’t do that. That’s not right.’”

“And that’s the background for her in their relationship going forward. I would be 100 percent down with that.”

For now, though, House of the Dragon’s writers are keeping the secrets of the second instalment close to their chests.

Moreover, as the writing stages of production are currently taking place, it’s unlikely the next 10 episodes will surface until 2024 at the very earliest.

Until then, fans are free to devour Martin’s previous novels in hopes of finding more answers to the ongoing Targaryen mystery.

House of the Dragon season 1 is available to stream on HBO Max in the USA and Sky Go and NOW in the UK.
