ITV axes star-studded sitcom after just one series

The comedy, The Family Pile, has just been axed by ITV after only one series.

The show, which featured stars like Sherlock’s Amanda Abbington and Downton Abbey’s Clare Calbraith, started airing on ITV and ITVX in January of this year. However, it will not be returning to TV screens.

A spokesperson for ITV has confirmed there are “no plans” for a second series of the Liverpool-based sitcom, when speaking to MailOnline.

They added: “We would like to thank all the cast and crew for their hard work in bringing the show alive on screen.”

The six-episode series follows four daughters as they come together to start sorting through their parents possessions at their family home, after both their mother and father pass away within six months of each other.

But as they do so, they begin to find out secrets about their late parents – and each other – in the process.

Clare summed up the show as being about, “the emergence of comedy from the tragedy, that sense of hope that comes out of dark situations”.

But sadly the show failed to find an audience.

A TV insider told The Sun the cast and crew were “gutted” ITV chose not to renew the show for another series.

“Unfortunately the ratings were lower than expected and ITV decided to concentrate on fresh comedies, rather than pin hopes on The Family Pile.”

They revealed: “The cast and crew are gutted as they felt it was a good sitcom and the best ones always take time to grow. But TV is a brutal industry and shows that are not instant successes rarely get a second chance.”

The show also starred Claire Keelan, from The Trip, James Nelson-Joyce, Alexandra Mardell, who played Emma Brooker on Coronation Street and Richard Peeple, among others.

The Family Pile is available to watch on ITVX.
