Joe Lycett takes thinly-veiled swipe at Holly Willoughby in Bafta speech
Joe Lycett shreds £10,000 following David Beckham ultimatum
Joe Lycett couldn’t resist taking a cheeky swipe at Holly Willoughby at the TV Baftas amid rumours of her feud with Phillip Schofield.
The comedian and TV presenter took home a gong for best feature after he held David Beckham to account for his multi-million pound deal for the Qatar World Cup despite the country’s anti-LGBT laws.
Threatening to shred £10,000 of his own money unless he pulled out, Lycett called out Beckham for his previous alignment with the LGBT community and status as a ‘gay icon’, and the hypocritical standard it set that he would go against it for money.
While Lycett later confirmed the shredding was a stunt and he had donated the money to LGBT+ charities, the move made international news.
Unfortunately, Lycett was not available to appear at the ceremony held this evening at London’s Royal Festival Hall, sending a statement in his place.
But that still didn’t stop the performer making a subtle dig at the latest scandal in the UK entertainment industry.
“I’m sorry to not be there, but according to my PR team I have shingles,” he declared in the message, in an apparent swipe at the same reason Holly’s been missing from This Morning over the past week.
He then thanked the team behind the feature, and dedicated the award to “the people still being oppressed in Qatar”.
The award was accepted on his behalf by the Joe Lycett’s Got Your Back creative team.

The features beat out Big Zuu’s Big Eats (Dave), The Martin Lewis Money Show Live (ITV1) and The Misadventures of Romesh Ranganathan (BBC Two) to the win.
Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield became the unexpected easy targets at tonight’s ceremony, with hosts Romesh Ranganathan and Rob Beckett also mocking the duo during their opening speech.
Making note of their “queue jump” controversy to see Queen Elizabeth lying in state last year, the pair took a jab at what happened and the outcome.
The pair pointed to Imelda Staunton, who is nominated for Best Actress as the late Queen in The Crown, and Rob joked: “She’s nominated for her performance in The Crown.
“Apparently, Holly and Phil got to watch that a couple of days before everybody else. A little bit of edge for you, early doors,” in reference to queue-gate.
