Kate Garraway snaps as GMB guest compares King to Stalin

Kate Garraway accuses guest of comparing King Charles to Stalin

Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway led a debate alongside co-host Richard Madeley about the £8million which has been set aside to offer every public body a free portrait of King Charles III following his upcoming coronation. Artist Christian Furr backed the idea but activist and filmmaker Femi Nylander disagreed as he explained people like Stalin used portraits to cement their dictatorship.

Speaking to the Good Morning Britain presenters about his experience of creating the late Queen’s portrait, Christian argued institutions should have a “representation of the King” and added it’s “a one-off”.

Turning to Femi, Kate asked: “What’s wrong with parking a little bit of public cash for a new King and also to celebrate a new monarch?”

“Well, I have something for you, but I want it back,” Femi replied, handing Richard a £20 note.

“A £20, OK what’s your point?” the broadcaster asked, to which Femi replied: “What do you see?”

“I see the Queen’s head wearing a crown,” Richard answered.

“Precisely,” Femi commented. “So, ever since I was a child, since I got my first piece of pocket money, I have had the Queen’s image on it.

“We’ve seen the stamps, we see the £20 note. Omnipresent, right? And at the end of the day, familiarity breeds comfort and comfort breeds empathy and empathy breeds familiarity, and when you see someone’s image…

“I mean, I have a grandma, she doesn’t look anything like me, she’s a five-foot-three white lady from Borrowdale.

“But if everyone in the UK saw her image their whole lives and heard stories about her their whole lives and stood up and sung ‘God save Femi’s gran,’ they’d love her too.

“This is something which is well-known culturally across different places. It is something that has been seen in a lot of countries where they have things called cults of personality.

“A lot of leaders in other countries who want to stay in power for a very long time will assign portraits of themselves to be hung in every place throughout the country.

“Stalin did it… and I’m in no way comparing the Queen to these people -“

“Well, you sort of are,” Kate cut in. “The difference is this is voluntary, this is if people choose to do it, it goes from a long history of tradition and why should King Charles be the first monarch to not have it done?”

“Well, this isn’t voluntary,” Femi disagreed, holding the note up again. “If I want cash I’ll have to have the Queen’s image on it and soon I’ll have to have Charles on it, it’s going to cost a lot of money to recall all the bank notes that already exist in order to have a new face on, and then it’s going to have to happen again whenever the next one is.”

Good Morning Britain airs on weekdays from 6am on ITV.
