Kate Winslet details ‘frightening’ and ‘very hard’ scene on I Am Ruth set

I Am Ruth: Trailer for feature length drama starring Kate Winslet

Kate Winslet has opened up about working on her gritty, feature-length drama I Am Ruth, which saw her starring opposite her real-life daughter Mia Threapleton.

The Channel 4 drama, which details the damaging effects of social media on mental health, saw Winslet and Threapleton playing mother and daughter on screen.

I Am Ruth not only won Best Single Drama at the BAFTA TV Awards but saw the Mare of Easttown star walk away with the Best Actress accolade as well.

Speaking to media including Express.co.uk, Winslet opened up about filming the drama: “There is a scene […] when Ruth is sitting on the edge of the bed and she just talks about how she doesn’t like herself anymore as a mother.

“And that was very hard because I can categorically say that half of those words have come out of very close friends’ mouths, probably my own mouth as some stage.

“And when we make a commitment to a character to such an extent that you are willing to bring your own stuff into the room, it’s quite frightening. And for me, that one was really difficult.”

Winslet went on to detail the process of working on I Am Ruth, which she created with BAFTA-winning director Dominic Savage: “I mean, everything about it was completely overwhelming.

“Everything about it was very hard for all of us. Just an incredible time really because we just had to throw ourselves at it with a huge amount of trust and commitment.

“We were with Dominic, who was going to look after us and gently crafting something that was very truthful and very sincere.”

The entire drama was improvised with none of the lines scripted, which Winslet said was “enormously challenging” but also “very rewarding”.

She went on to reflect on why the BAFTA win for I Am Ruth was different to some of the other projects she’d done in the past.

“So much of our experiences, people we know experiences, members of our family’s experiences, friends of friends, our children’s friends, parts of everyone were in this story and that makes it very, very precious, I have to say,” Winslet said.

“It does make this feel extremely unique and very different because we did manage to create something that has stayed with people, amongst people and that’s a huge privilege as an actor to be able to do something like that.

“The mental health crisis among teenagers because of the damaging effects of social media – it’s no secret and it’s global and it doesn’t seem to be getting any better.

“The reason we wanted to make this film was because that might make some people say, ‘Hang on, that’s me and that’s happened to us and we have to do something.’ We can, like Ruth does and like Freya does and so it’s enormously important.”

Winslet expressed her surprise at I Am Ruth’s win: “It’s still a huge award. It doesn’t change.

“The job doesn’t get any easier, it doesn’t get old for me at all and I honestly did not think that we would win.

“So I am genuinely shocked, really and truly properly shocked and so proud that we made something that touched people and people really thought about and talked about and are still talking about. “They still come up to me in the street and talk to me about it and that is the most powerful thing about the job that we do, is that sometimes you can [make a difference] and that’s why we did.”

Adding: “That’s why we did I Am Ruth and why we made this single drama.”
