The Lioness who recently announced her retirement from football appeared on Wednesday’s BBC Breakfast to discuss her stellar career. BBC hosts Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt asked the 35-year-old how it felt to have the support of the Duke of Cambridge and the football star described him as “down to earth”. She went on to share an “embarrassing” story with him which the Royal always brings up.

“We have England football star Jill Scott with us, who has just retired, of course,” Charlie announced, introducing the sportswoman.

“Welcome, Jill! You had quite s summer, didn’t you? You got a medal, you won a competition – have you got the medal with you?”

“No, I haven’t lost it though, it is safely away somewhere,” she replied.

“Do you really know where it is?” Naga asked, laughing.

“Yeah I do, I actually do with this one!” she stated.

“Rumour has it Jill that you lose a lot of things, is that true,” Charlie probed.

“Yeah I do, but with this one I’ve actually got it… I’m not going to tell you where it is, I’m going to keep that a secret!” Jill smiled.

“No, no – as long as you know that’s the important thing!” Charlie agreed.

As she spoke about her magnificent summer, Charlie added: “Prince William has paid tribute to you. How does that feel?”

“Yeah, Prince William, I’ve said in recent interviews, he’s always supported the team.

“So in 2015 in Canada the World Cup, he came to see us before that tournament.

“And yeah, he’s invited us to places and he’s just always been in touch.

“And before this Euros, they said, ‘Oh we’re going to have a special visit’ and I knew it was him.

“It was lovely to have that embrace with him, apparently he broke protocols doing that!

“But it was just so nice for him to be there, he’s such a lovely guy, so down to earth and we’re very appreciative of his support.”

“And he’s genuinely interested in the women’s game,” Naga pointed out.

“Yeah, he is, yeah I’m talking to him and I kind of forget who he is,” Jill answered.

“Obviously, he’s such an important character and you’re just talking to him like he’s a friend he’s so down to earth.

“But yeah, he asked to phone the team before a match in 2019 just to wish us luck.”

“Have you had a few kick-abouts with him?” Charlie asked.

“Yeah, so the first time I met him – that’s why he wrote that tweet saying ‘Watch your sliding tackles,’ because the first time I met him was a kind of charity game,” Jill recalled.

“And I slipped and absolutely wiped him out! So I’m always a bit embarrassed about that, but he always remembers it!”

BBC Breakfast airs daily at 6am on BBC One.
