Lola reassures Lexi that she won't die but tragedy will follow in EastEnders
Jay (Jamie Borthwick), Billy (Perry Fenwick) and Ben (Max Bowden) have been cautioning Lola (Danielle Harold) for a while now in EastEnders that she should be honest with her daughter Lexi (Isabella Brown) about her illness.
As viewers know, Lola has been told that her brain tumour can’t be cured, and she will die from it. While Lola has been trying to come to terms with the news, one thing she couldn’t face was bringing fear and sadness into her daughter’s life by telling her the truth.
Meanwhile Ben is trying to raise the money to take Lola for treatment abroad, so Lola is still holding out a slim hope that there’s no need to tell Lexi anything because things could still work out.
Lexi is a very bright girl and in tonight’s episode she knew something was up when she overheard Lola and Ben talking about going abroad. Lola quickly covered by saying they were planning a holiday to Disney World, but this wasn’t enough to allay Lexi’s fears. When a letter arrived for Lola, Lexi quietly took it to read on her own.
Lola panicked when the school rang to tell her that Lexi had never arrived, but eventually they found her in the park – where she’d been reading the letter that outlined Lola’s diagnosis and her treatment plan.
Realising it was now time to tell her daughter the truth, Lola sat her down and told her about the surgery and about the chemo and radiotherapy she was having.
‘Are you going to go bald?’ Lexi asked, and Lola explained she might lose some hair but not too much. Ben said if that round of treatment didn’t work they’d go to America and try something else.’
Lexi realised this meant that the current treatment might not work and she asked her mum outright if she was going to die. She wanted a yes or no answer. Lola insisted that no, she wasn’t going to die, and sobbed as she hugged her ‘brave girl.’

But sadly we know there isn’t going to be a happy ending or miracle cure in this storyline.
EastEnders worked with the charity Hope Support Services, a charity dedicated to working with young people aged 5 to 25 when a family member is diagnosed with cancer.
‘We’re pleased to see EastEnders focusing on how Lexi is affected by Lola’s brain tumour,’ Lorna Russell, Safeguarding Lead at the charity, commented.
