Beauty and the Geek landed on Discovery+ and opened up the UK to the world of eight male self-proclaimed “geeks” and eight female “beauties” taking on challenges to test their compatibility with one another. Former Saturdays singer Mollie King and comedian Matt Edmondson host the series and expressed their love for the contestants and how well they adapted to the show. However, Matt opened up about his fears for the show and how some viewers may have found the concept as “woke”.

Touching on whether he watched the show back in the day and what he felt when he was asked to take part, Matt explained: “I watched it back in the day like yonks ago.

“But what I will say is, it is a really different show, I think the thing that has survived is the name Beauty and the Geek, but the tone of it is about the warmest thing I have ever seen.

“Part of the reason that we wanted to do it is because we were waiting for the right thing to come along and do, we do radio together, we are genuinely best mates, we love each other to bits.

“We were just looking for the right thing and this felt so where we wanted things to go and hopefully where TV is going which is nice people doing heartwarming things,” he told Express.co.uk.

He continued: “We are empowering the word geek, we are both quite geeky deep down. My hobbies and interests are magic, board games and synthesisers, all very cool things.

“I think being a geek is about being different and I think the coolest people in the world are a bit different, and I think these guys are some of the coolest people.”

Mollie added: “One thing you see on this show is, you can’t just say ‘oh that is a geek’ because everybody is so different.

“I think that what we have all learned is that we are all slightly geeky and that we should celebrate that and that is definitely what the show does.

“I think that as the show goes on you see the journey everyone goes on and it is just fascinating to watch everybody.”

Speaking about the dynamic of the cast members and some of the worries he felt, Matt explained: “There is no nastiness, there is no undertone of people being bitchy or mean or creating tension.

“It is not a show about friction to create drama, it is a show about rebirth. I hung out with the geeks quite a lot and I think that there was a little worry about the ‘woke’ perception of the show.

“But they have been hanging out loads after the show and these guys are like every other week doing something.

“I am all for seeing different people on TV, I think it is great. I think some of this cast would get on Love Island, but actually, they are the sort of cast you wouldn’t necessarily think to put on a dating show.

“Although I use the word dating lightly because we didn’t think this was going to be a dating show when we started, it turns out, it was.

“So yeah I think it is great to show a real variety of a cast, a different bunch.”

The premise of the show matches physically attractive women with socially awkward, self-proclaimed “geeky” men.

The women try to learn about academia such as rocket science or anatomy from the men, while the men try to learn social skills from the women.

Produced by Banijay label Initial, the eight-episode series will follow the newly-formed couples as they head “on a journey of self-discovery, and hopefully love” and take on challenges designed to “reveal there is more to them than meets the eye”.

Then, as the series progresses, the pairs will be eliminated until the last couple standing are crowned the winners and offered a huge cash prize of £50,000.

Beauty and the Geek first aired on US broadcast network Fox in 2005 and has since been adapted in more than 20 markets around the world.

Beauty and the Geek is available to stream exclusively on Discovery+.
