Matt Tebbutt begged viewers not to vote for him to cook the octopus ragu dish on the latest instalment of Saturday Kitchen. Cliff Richard was the special guest and the host revealed his new affinity for the sea creature. Matt opened up on the lasting effect the Netflix documentary film My Octopus Teacher had on him.

Matt was charged with the honour of cooking a dish with ingredients the legendary singer either loves or despises.

Cliff was offered up a chicken tikka masala curry for his food heaven option.

His food hell was actually raw oysters, but he also had octopus on his list too and Matt shared his newfound hatred of cooking that particular seafood.

Addressing viewers Matt admitted: “If they vote for hell I will cook something I swore I’d never cook again after watching that film My Octopus Teacher, but here we are, I’m fickle.”

He continued: “So I am going to make a rich octopus ragu, packed with red wine tomatoes and fennel and some smoked pancetta.

“I am going to slice up the octopus, while in tears, and I am going to serve it with some soft parmesan polenta.”

The fearful host then begged fans of the BBC cooking show: “Don’t make me cook that.”

Thankfully for Cliff and Matt, the public empathised with his predicament and the Mistletoe and Wine star got to tuck into his salmon dish.

Saturday’s episode was the first festive-inspired edition of the live cooking show and the guests were treated to plenty of Christmas delights.

Guest chefs Itamar Srulovich, Sarit Packer and Ellis Barrie were on hand to feed everyone their yuletide recipes.

With it being December, the Millenium Prayer singer was there to promote his new album full of festive covers, appropriately titled Christmas with Cliff.

The 82-year-old star opened up on how he feels being the elder statesman of the charts nowadays.

Matt asked Cliff: “Currently, you’re battling out in the charts, you’re sandwiched between Stormzy and Swifty.”

Cliff replied: “Funny thing is, I shouldn’t really be here. I never thought I’d age to 50 let alone 82, and all these Stormzys are having to compete with me.

“Whereas I thought it would be a competition between some of the new guys. My record is number two, and that’s without any streaming.”

The seemingly ageless star is synonymous with Christmas time, but he has not released a new song around this time of year since 2003.

Now, he faces a battle in the charts in the generation of streaming platforms, something he is not a fan of.

He told Matt: “The thing that bugs me is that in the advent of the internet, and then a lot of new artists coming in.

“Although it’s become that if you’re over the age of about 30 or 35, you don’t get the airplay.”

Saturday Kitchen airs every Saturday at 10am on BBC One.
