Miriam Margolyes has paid tribute to Robbie Coltrane but also hit out at his lifestyle habits during her interview on the Today Programme. The late actor’s friend also revealed the conversations she had with the Harry Potter star about her feelings on those issues.
Miriam was a guest on the Today show and used the opportunity to honestly share her thoughts on the late Cracker actor.
She told Martha Kearney and Justin Webb: “He was a very fine actor and a delightful man, huge in stature, in personality, in heart.
“He was exceptional and I am really sad. I didn’t know he was ill. He just put on too much weight, stupid boy!”
“That’s the problem, he loved to drink. I used to wag my finger at him.”

She emotionally reflected: “It’s such a waste to think of all that talent, that fire, he acted with passion. He was really wonderful.”
“He had a heart of gold, he was kind, he was sweet, he was affectionate. All the good things in him were light and the bad things he harnessed for his work.”
“The thing about Robbie is he was irreplaceable, he is absolutely a unique figure and powerful, towering over Scotland. I really loved him and I am so sad about it, so sad.”
The actor remarked: “The fullness of him as a person and as a talent, that’s what I treasure and remember.”
During a lively segment, Miriam also landed herself in some trouble with BBC producers after she paid tribute to her late friend.
Beforehand, the new Chancellor Jeremy Hunt was grilled on the show on the future of Liz Truss and the economy.
Clearly not a fan of the politician, she joked: “I never thought I’d be sitting in the seat… [that Jeremy Hunt was sat in]”.
Unaware she was still on air, she continued: “When I saw him there I just said ‘You’ve got a hell of a job, the best of luck’ and what I really wanted to say was ‘f*** you, you b*****d!’ But you can’t say that.”
Robbie Coltrane, famed for his roles on Cracker and Harry Potter died at the age of 72 on Friday.
In a statement, his agent Belinda Wright looked back on his stellar career, writing: “My client and friend Robbie Coltrane OBE passed away on Friday October 14.
“Robbie was a unique talent, sharing the Guinness Book of Records’ Award for winning three consecutive Best Actor BAFTAs for his portrayal of Fitz in Granada TV’s series Cracker in 1994, 1995 and 1996 with Sir Michael Gambon.”
“He will probably be best remembered for decades to come as Hagrid in the Harry Potter films, a role which brought joy to children and adults alike all over the world, prompting a stream of fan letters every week for over 20 years.
She continued: “For me personally I shall remember him as an abidingly loyal client. As well as being a wonderful actor, he was forensically intelligent, brilliantly witty and after 40 years of being proud to be called his agent, I shall miss him.
Stephen Fry joined the many celebrities to share their tributes to the late actor.
He tweeted: “He tweeted: “I first met Robbie Coltrane almost exactly 40 years ago. I was awe/terror/love struck all at the same time.
“Such depth, power and talent: funny enough to cause helpless hiccups & honking as we made our first TV show, ‘Alfresco’. Farewell, old fellow. You’ll be so dreadfully missed.”
