Mock The Week axed by BBC after 17 years on air with eight episodes left

The BBC has confirmed that the popular programme Mock The Week will be axed – with the next eight episodes being the last for the show.

After 17 long years, the channel has decided that the next series will be the last for the programme which is hosted by Irish comedian Dara O'Brian.

The final instalments will be aired in the autumn and then show will be removed from air, for good.

Mock The Week has been a home hub for many comedians over the years, including the likes of Frankie Boyle, Rory Bremner, Russell Howard and Chris Addison.

The show first graced screens in 2005 and went on to produce 21 successful series with more than 2 episodes going out to fans.

In a statement, Dara explained that they were "closing the doors" as he hilariously went on to slam those who had found fame on the show and not been back in contact.

The host said: "That’s it folks, the UK has finally run out of news. The storylines were getting crazier and crazier – global pandemics, divorce from Europe, novelty short-term prime ministers.

"It couldn’t go on."

He added: "And so, regretfully, we are closing the doors on Dara and Hugh’s Academy for Baby Comedians. We just couldn't be more silly than the news was already.

"Huge thanks to all our guests over the years, so many of whom went on to huge successes of their own, and never write or call. It was a joy!"

Many household names such as Michael McIntyre, Sarah Millican and John Bishop had started out their careers on Mock The Week, with their on-screen careers skyrocketing after.

Ina follow up statement, The BBC confirmed: "The next series of Mock The Week will be the last, we are really proud of the show but after 21 series we have taken the difficult decision in order to create room for new shows.

"We would like to thank Angst Productions, host Dara O’Briain, panellist Hugh Dennis and all the guest comedians involved in the show across the 21 series."
