Ncuti Gatwa admits he leaked his Doctor Who casting while ‘a little tipsy’
Ncuti Gatwa and Russell T Davies react to Doctor Who role
Doctor Who is coming back in November 2023 with three special episodes featuring David Tennant as the 14th Doctor, marking the 60th anniversary.
Ncuti Gatwa’s first episode as the 15th Doctor will air over the festive period, with fans keen to see the Sex Education star in action.
He revealed when he went for the audition, he thought there was “no way” he would get it.
The star explained: “‘It’s a British institution and there’s no way they’ll cast a Black man.’ So, I just had fun.”
Yet once he had been cast, he struggled to hide the overwhelming secret and admitted to spilling the beans.
He told British Vogue: “I felt numb. And keeping it a secret until the announcement was very difficult.
“I’d often get a little tipsy in Soho House, make a new best friend in the bathroom, tell them and run off. Thankfully, it never got out.”
Earlier this year, the BBC released the first images of Ncuti as the Doctor with his new accomplice, Millie Gibson as Ruby Sunday.

After a long period of speculation as to who would be taking over from Jodie Whittaker, he said: “There aren’t quite the words to describe how I’m feeling.
“A mix of deeply honoured, beyond excited and of course a little bit scared.
“This role and show means so much to so many around the world, including myself, and each one of my incredibly talented predecessors has handled that unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care. I will endeavour my utmost to do the same.”
When the news was finally unveiled, he said he was really surprised as he was “geared up for a lot of hate”.

However, he said the response has been extremely positive, which he found overwhelming.
He did admit to feeling the pressure as the countdown to the new season begins, but the star is grateful for the support of returning showrunner Russell T Davies.
Russell paid tribute to the star, telling Radio Times in a separate interview: “Sometimes you know you’ve got a secret. And you hold it close to your chest and let it burn, because secrets are so delicious.
“I’ve got that right now, because my secret is seeing Ncuti with Millie Gibson on the rushes of Doctor Who, every single day, and oh my God, this is so good!”
