Netflix cancels hit show Sex/Life after two series with lead actress branding it gimmicky

In a shock announcement, Netflix has confirmed they have cancelled its hit show Sex/Life after just two series.

The series, which was inspired by the novel 44 Chapters About 4 Men by B.B. Easton, became a huge success after it launched on the streaming service in 2021 with creator Stacy Rukeyser previously sharing hopes for a third series.

However, fans were left disappointed when it returned earlier this year and found that it had two fewer episodes.

A Netflix spokesperson said series two wrapped up storylines for key characters whose relationships came to a happy conclusion and bought the show to its "natural ending".

Netflix confirmed the raunchy programme will not be returning for a third season.

The announcement came soon after lead actress Sarah Shahi called out Netflix for not providing "the support" that she received the first season.

The steamy series is focused around Sarah playing the role of Billie Connelly – a married woman with children whose suburban life takes a walk on the wild side when her ex enters her life again.

Sarah told Amanda Hirsch's Not Skinny Not Fat podcast: "I’m not going to put it down, but I definitely did not have the support that I did the first season from the people involved in the show.

"It became a much different thing for me, and I’m not afraid to say that."

The actress also said there were moments it felt "very gimmicky" that she "couldn’t get behind”.

Sarah added: “That’s part of what I do. I’m not always gonna get along or agree with a filmmaker.

"I’m not always gonna like what I have to do or say. But that’s my job, to make it believable.

“I’m never gonna work for Netflix again now after saying all this, but I can’t lie.”

Adam Demos, who played Sarah's ex-boyfriend and love interest, Brad Simon on the show recently praised the actress and their on-screen dynamic.

During an interview with PEOPLE, he gushed: "It was nice. [Sarah's] such an incredible actor, and I always feel very lucky to be doing scenes with her, because she definitely makes me better. But it was just because her, as a person too, it was fun.

"It was nice to get back together," he added.

"I'm such a fan of her as an actor and obviously as a person. So if you can mix those two worlds together, more the merrier for me. It was really nice on a lot of levels."

He went on to say: "She's my favourite person in the world… I love her so much, so the more I can hang with her in general, the better my life is. I've said it, I keep saying it, but just seeing her as a professional and as an actor and the number one on the call sheet, she's really inspiring.

"And she's such a great energy to have on set. So incredibly talented … to be able to work, be employed on a really cool show, at the same time working together, it's a dream come true."
