Olivia Colman finally joins Marvel Cinematic Universe
Oscar-winning actress Olivia Colman has delighted fans after it was revealed she is the latest star set to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The British acting legend, who picked up her best actress Academy Award for her role in The Favourite, will appear alongside Don Cheadle and Samuel L Jackson in the upcoming series Secret Invasion, which is due to be released in 2023.
The series sees Jackson reprise his character of Avengers boss Nick Fury as he deals with a faction of shapeshifting Skrulls, who have been infiltrating Earth for years.
A short trailer for the series was teased at the Disney D23 Expo on Saturday, revealing Colman’s involvement.
In the clip, Jackson warns: ‘This is my war, alone. I’m the last person standing between them and what they really want.’
‘You’re in no shape for this fight that lies before us,’ The Crown’s Colman fires back at him.
The trailer also featured appearances from Ben Mendelsohn as the Skrull Talos, Don Cheadle as James ‘Rhodey’ Rhodes, Emilia Clarke, and Martin Freeman.
Naturally, fans have gone wild for Colman’s role in the series, with one admitting: ‘I’m only watching Secret Invasion for Olivia Colman, I hope people know that.’
‘EXCUSE ME? IS THAT QUEEN OLIVIA COLMAN IN THE PEOPLE’S MCU?? OMG OMG OMG,’ another said.
‘OLIVIA COLMAN IS NOW IN THE MCU WE WON,’ celebrated a third.
Disney also surprised fans at its D23 Expo with several exclusive looks at snippets from James Cameron’s highly anticipated Avatar sequel, The Way Of Water.
Audience members in the main exhibition hall in Anaheim, California, were handed 3D glasses to watch the underwater scenes on two enormous screens.
The clips featured appearances from returning stars Sam Worthington and Sigourney Weaver as their big, blue, CGI-selves.
The Way Of Water follows the first Avatar film which, after it was released in 2009, became the highest-grossing film of all time and won three Oscars.
As well as returners Worthington, Weaver, and Zoe Saldana, Avatar: The Way Of Water will see Kate Winslet, Michelle Yeoh, Vin Diesel and Edie Falco join the cast.
The film is set for release on December 16.
Elsewhere, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige brought franchise stars including Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Anthony Mackie and Cheadle to the stage to discuss upcoming superhero films and series.
The cast of the Black Panther sequel, Wakanda Forever, also took to the stage, one day after the star of the original film, Chadwick Boseman, was awarded a posthumous Disney Legend Award.
Tom Hiddleston, Sofia Di Martino, and Owen Wilson also appeared to discuss the second series of Loki.
Elsewhere, in the Star Wars universe, the cast of spin-off Andor arrived to introduce the final trailer for the upcoming series.
Secret Invasion will begin streaming on Disney Plus in 2023.
