Paul O’Grady special praised for including Brendan Murphy tribute
The late Queen loved chatting to Paul O’Grady
At the end of March, comedian and presenter Paul O’Grady died unexpectedly at the age of 67. To pay their respects to the late star, ITV dedicated an hour-long documentary to Paul looking back at his career. However, viewers were left in tears at the emotional special.
On March 29, Paul’s partner Andre Portasio confirmed the 67-year-old had died while at home.
The comedian, who was also known for his drag queen persona Lily Savage, had a longstanding working relationship with ITV, who decided to air a celebratory film in his memory.
During the hour-long episode, the documentary featured clips of the late star himself along with interviews from his closest friends such as Carol Vorderman and Julian Clary.
For The Love of Paul paid tribute to the presenter’s career in the industry along with hearing from members of staff from Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, a charity he was heavily involved with.
At the end of the documentary, it closed with a moving tribute to honour Paul’s ex-partner and former manager Brendan Murphy.
The closing credits displayed the message “RIP Brendan Murphy” as viewers quickly took to social media to praise the moving documentary and sweet tribute to Brendan.
Emma1883 commented: “I’m not crying, you are[sic]. We really have lost the true meaning of a National Treasure [sic]. Well done, @ITV – a beautiful tribu

HeatherAshton tweeted: “If you haven’t already, watch #fortheloveofpaulogrady. An amazing tribute to an absolute icon. Tears of laughter followed tears of sadness, so get the tissues ready. RIP Paul.”
With Brian_JTC adding: “Brilliant programme, and so glad they mention Brendan Murphy at the end.”
Paul and Brendan were together for 25 years before he died from a brain tumour that was inoperable in 2005.

In the past, the comedian had spoken about the death of his partner and the impact it had on his life.
At the time, he told the Mirror: “I’d lost my best mate, someone who’d been in my life for 25 years and saw me through the days when I was lucky to earn £50 for standing on a beer crate in the corner of a pub telling jokes.
“Murph and I were like brothers – joined at the hip, thick as thieves. It transcended any sexual relationship we’d had. This was a partnership. A double act, Emma Peel and Steed, Laurel and Hardy.”
A decade later, Paul found happiness once again when he went on to marry Andre Portasio, who broke the news of Paul’s death to the world.
In a statement, Andre said: “It is with great sadness that I inform you that Paul has passed away unexpectedly but peacefully yesterday evening.
“We ask, at this difficult time, that whilst you celebrate his life you also respect our privacy as we come to terms with this loss.
“He will be greatly missed by his loved ones, friends, family, animals and all those who enjoyed his humour, wit and compassion.
“I know that he would want me to thank you for all the love you have shown him over the years.”
For The Love Of Paul O’Grady is available to watch on ITVX.
