Sad EastEnders exit scenes for Billy as he says goodbye to Will ahead of jail

EastEnders legend Billy Mitchell (Perry Fenwick) is convinced that he is going to prison for a very long time, despite Phil’s (Steve McFadden) efforts to secure his freedom.

Billy, as viewers know, is facing a life behind bars for a crime he did not commit, after Phil corroborated claims to DCI Keeble (Alison Newman) that his cousin was to blame for the death of het father in a historic warehouse shooting in the 70s.

Billy, while innocent of the charge, was actually there on the evening in question – and had procured the firearm used in the murder.

Keeble is determined to see the Mitchells suffer for what they did, and therefore she forced Phil to grass on his own cousin, after using Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace) as a pawn in a bid to get the hard-man to turn.

Phil ultimately gave her what she wanted, selling Billy down the river in exchange for his own – and Kat’s – freedom, but the gangster has been determined to make things right, vowing to get Billy off the murder charge.

His plan to use old nemesis Keanu Taylor (Danny Walters) backfired when he couldn’t let go of his grudge with the mechanic, and Keeble – after finding out what Phil had been up to – retaliated by kidnapping Kat and Tommy Moon (Sonny Kendall).

The outcome of this plot development remains to be seen. Billy, meanwhile, is convinced that he’s going to prison, having come to believe that Phil has failed in his mission to secure his freedom.

Wednesday’s (January 4) offering of the serial drama saw the market trader tell Honey (Emma Barton) that he intends to plead guilty, despite being innocent, as this will likely guarantee him a shorter sentence.

In emotional scenes, he told son Will (Freddie Phillips) of his plan, reiterating his innocence, before giving him a watch that his own brother had given to him.

Will broke down in tears, hugging his dad, evidently not ready to say goodbye. But will Billy end up behind bars? Or will Phil’s plan pay off in the end?

Only time will tell.

EastEnders continues Tuesday January 5 at 7:30pm on BBC One.
