Despite this, showrunner Shonda Rhimes did reveal there were some real facts about the couple she kept in the drama among the fictionalised storyline.
Speaking to Netflix, Shonda shared: “Of the true historical facts I decided to keep in the show, one was the fact that King George was a farmer.
“They called him Farmer George back then, and Farmer King. And also the idea that he’s very into astronomy. “
She continued: “He really did build one of the first-of-its-kind observatories — not in that era necessarily or in that location, but he did really build the observatory, it was a real thing.

“And the transit of Venus is an actual astronomical phenomenon that actually happened during that period of time. We looked that up.”
The showrunner explained: “One of the things that’s real, but that we also took liberties with, is Queen Charlotte’s baby race.
“That happened, the baby race actually happened. It is a fact.
“But Queen Charlotte was much older when it occurred, and so did not live to see the child who would become Queen Victoria be born.”
Shonda added: “But I love the idea of it; I love the idea of her wanting to secure her legacy. And I love the idea of her getting to the fruition of that, which was great.”
Throughout their relationship, Queen Charlotte and King George had 15 children but only 13 of them made it into adulthood.
Queen Charlotte’s son Edward, Duke of Kent won the baby race in 1819 when he and Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld had his only child, Alexandrina Victoria.
She would later become Queen Victoria, who went on to reign for 63 years before her death in 1901.
Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story premieres on Thursday, May 4, on Netflix.
