Simpsons writer pays tribute to Queen Elizabeth II with cartoon character

The Simpsons writer AI Jean has paid tribute to Queen Elizabeth II, after her death was announced earlier this evening.

Buckingham Palace confirmed that the 96-year-old monarch died, shortly after 6.30pm, with a statement: ‘The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon.

‘The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.’

Celebrities and politicians across the globe have paid tribute to the Queen, with Jean posting a picture of Queen Elizabeth II in the Simpsons on Twitter, captioned: ‘God rest the Queen.’

In the show, the Queen featured in an episode where she was meant to give Krusty the Crown a knighthood, before it instead went to Elton John.

In another episode, in which Homer and the family travelled to London, the Simpsons Queen sentenced Homer (and later pardoned him) to be imprisoned in the Tower of London.
