Celebrity friends and comedic legends Steve Martin and Martin Short took on hosting duties for the latest edition of Saturday Night Live last week. In their opening monologue, the co-hosts reflected on their previous times hosting the NBC show and took the time to roast each other as well as the controversial release of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s new Netflix project.

Comedy star Martin likened himself and co-host Steve to Harry and Meghan in a cheeky jab on SNL last week.

During their opening monologue, the pair celebrated Steve’s staggering 16 times hosting the show compared to Martin’s slightly less impressive three.

Martin then remarked: “You know, Steve, we are like Harry and Meghan.

“No one’s rooting for us, but you’ll tune in to watch anyway.”

The release of Harry and Meghan has certainly been marred with backlash and controversy after the couple’s exit from the Royal Family in 2020.

Meghan’s story of curtsying during her first meeting with the Queen quickly went viral, with some calling her out for mocking royal protocol.

Several critics have also alleged their interviews are packed with misinformation and fabrications.

Even so, Martin was right to call out how many viewers have tuned in to the series despite not necessarily supporting the Sussexes.

The documentary has quickly become one of Netflix’s biggest releases of the year after it smashed the streamer’s UK record within just 24 hours.

It managed to surpass previous record holder The Crown, which pulled in 1.1 million viewers for the first episode of season five, by more than double.

Episode one reached a staggering 2.4 million views on Smart TV devices, according to data provided by overnights.tv [via Deadline].

Episode two pulled in 1.5 million streams, with episode three achieving 800,000 views within the first two days of release.

The next three episodes, which will drop this Thursday, are on track to reach an equally enormous audience.

Meanwhile, figures for the latest instalment of SNL have been equally impressive, with each episode of the 48th instalment pulling in roughly four million viewers.

In their monologue, Steve made another topical zinger when he compared Martin to this year’s World Cup, which has just seen England drop out following a rough bout against France.

“I have to say, for me, working with Marty Short is like World Cup soccer,” he said. “Somehow, I just can’t get into it.”

They then confirmed they are currently working on the third season of their hit Hulu series Only Murders in the Building, which also stars Selena Gomez.

The comedy-crime drama has become a massive international hit thanks to its availability on Disney+ in other territories.

This week’s episode of SNL will be hosted by Elvis star Austin Butler with a musical performance by Lizzo.

Harry and Meghan: Volume II will be released Thursday, December 15 on Netflix. Saturday Night Live season 48 continues Saturdays on NBC in the USA.
