Spoilers: David pretends Ollie never existed as Susan returns in Casualty
The title of this Casualty episode was ‘We Need To Talk About Ollie,’ after the book and film ‘We Need To Talk About Kevin,’ which dealt with the build-up to and aftermath of a school shooting.
And talking about Ollie was what his mother, Rosalene (Jackie Knowles), was desperate to do. Convinced her son had been led down a violent path by other people, she wanted to get his story out by talking to a journalist. David (Jason Durr), however, wanted exactly the opposite. After burning Ollie’s possessions last week in an effort to wipe his son out of his life, he thought that no amount of talking would help.
Rosalene was desperate to hold on to anything that reminded her of the lovely boy that she’d known Ollie to be and wanted something of his to keep – but David had burned everything.
We previously saw David’s anguish when he looked at a notebook that had been among Ollie’s things, and finally we discovered something of what was in it when David described it to Rosalene.
‘He didn’t want to be in this world any more,’ he told her. ‘He was in so much pain. And there are no answers for what he did.’ He told her that the book had been horrific to read. ‘You really don’t want that in your head,’ he said.
All that was left of Ollie’s possessions were the eyes of the blue teddy bear that Ollie always slept with when he was little. David handed one to Rosalene and kept the other himself, the only physical reminders they have left of their son.
David’s life has been very bleak recently, but there may be a glimmer of hope for him as a new friend arrived in the form of Susan (Rachel Bavidge), a nurse at the hospital who is currently working as a barista after having a bad bipolar episode. Susan is kind, gentle and understanding and seems to be exactly what David needs in his life. But after telling her that he has no children, could David’s grief over Ollie get in the way of what could be a promising relationship for him?
Elsewhere, Dylan (William Beck) was magnificent as he took a stand against management consultant Marcus (Adam Sina) and his ‘pinch points and economies’ approach to departmental efficiency. Dylan told him very forcefully that the ED was on its knees, with patients now being admitted in crisis because they weren’t seen earlier. ‘Short of standing in front of you naked with the words “please help” smeared across my chest in excrement I don’t know what else I’m meant to do,’ Dylan insisted.
This earned him a handshake from Dylan. A handshake from anyone is a rare enough sight in these covidy times, so coming from Dylan it’s a huge deal.
