Succession sparks fan frenzy as ludicrously capacious bag goes viral
Succession: Brian Cox on change to Logan’s backstory
On Sunday, HBO saw the return of TV’s most chaotic family as Succession’s fourth season premiered. The explosive first episode also saw Tom Wambsgans (played by Matthew Macfadyen) slam a Burberry tote for its loud luxury style, however the accessory has since gone viral all over social media.
The season four premiere kicked off at Logan Roy’s (Brian Cox) birthday, but as he begrudgingly joined the celebrations, Cousin Greg (Nicolas Braun) quickly became the centre of attention.
All eyes were on his uninvited date, Bridget (Francesca Root-Dodson), who made an obvious attempt to fit in with the billionaire family.
Although she posted a photo of the party on social media and took a selfie with Logan, it was her Burberry Tote which seemingly annoyed Tom.
He brought this up to Greg as he asked: “I hear you’ve made an enormous faux-pas, everyone laughing up their sleeves at your date.”
After a shocked Greg, probed for a reason, Tom responded: “Why? Because she’s brought a ludicrously capacious bag.”
He continued: “What’s even in there? Flat shoes for the subway? Her lunch pail? I mean, Greg, it’s monstrous.
“It’s gargantuan, you can take it camping. You could slide it across the floor after a bank job.”
Viewers couldn’t get enough of Tom’s brutal commentary of the designer $3,000 bag as the Burberry tote went viral on social media.

Taking to Twitter @thedylanhafer laughed: “Imagine you’re watching the Succession premiere and you realize you have this bag in your closet.”
@CultureShockArt added: “Poor Burberry girl didn’t stand a chance. I haven’t laughed so hard over a bag since this.”
A third viewer @seijisrow remarked: “Many bags have been fumbled in succession but this was the worst.”
A curious @julesrules31 questioned: “Need to know how many Burberry tote bags went off to The RealReal basement today bc of Succession.”

@karenjaasiel shared: “Succession confirmed that my hate for large bags is valid.”
While @bestluvk stated: “I really hate succession for disillusioning me with this bag when I’ve always been eyeing this bag in Farfetch.”
The quip revealed just how the rich truly navigate luxury with subtlety as Bridget assumed she would fit right in.
Despite this Succession has only helped the brand flourish as the searches for Burberry skyrocketed after the episode aired.
The co-founder and chief commercial officer of 3DLook, Whitney Cathcart told Harper’s Bazaar: “Burberry’s tote bag might not meet the standards for Succession’s top 0.1 percent.
“But luckily for the luxury fashion house, they don’t speak for the average consumer,” “While Tom was busy firing off insults, the rest of us were Googling where we could get our own.”
Whitney added: “Tom’s sharp tongue might have just earned Burberry some extra sales. After all, the majority of us do use the subway.”
Succession season 4 continues Sundays on HBO in the USA and on NOW in the UK.
