The best new TV to stream next week – from Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power to I Am A Killer | The Sun

WE'RE never short of exciting new TV releases at the moment, and this week is no exception.

There are plenty of hot new series and movies set to come out over the next few days, and we've rounded them all up for you.

Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power – Amazon Prime

Hot on the heels of Game Of Thrones prequel House Of The Dragon, here comes the long-awaited Lord Of The Rings TV series.

Based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s writings, and set thousands of years before the fantastical events that play out in The Hobbit and The Lord Of The Rings novels, the eight-episode series takes us back to a time of peace among all the various fantastical folk found in Middle-earth.

Of course, a bunch of elves and dwarves sitting around getting on famously wouldn’t make for a very exciting telly show, but fear not because before long, a shadow falls across the land as the evil Sauron begins his terrible rise.

That rise sets in motion the adventures of younger versions of characters who’ll be familiar to fans of the books and films, including Galadriel (Morfydd Clark), Elrond (Robert Aramayo) and Isildur (Maxim Baldry).

There’s also lots of less well-known figures from Tolkien’s history of Middle-earth, like elven queen Miriel (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) and dwarf prince Durin IV (Owain Arthur), plus some totally new characters, including hobbit Sadoc Burrows (Lenny Henry).

With Amazon set to make five seasons – a commitment worth $1billion – the show looks as spectacular as you might expect and holds the title of being the most expensive series in history.

Of course, if elves, orcs, dwarves and hobbits aren’t your cup of Miruvor – that’s a popular elvish beverage, if you’re wondering – it probably won’t matter how much cash has been splashed on it.

But for obsessives, there’s so much to enjoy and immerse yourself in here, it will seem worth every penny.

So far, so Love Island. But there’s a twist, because those 12 singletons are actually six pairs of siblings, on hand to either help or hinder each other’s quest to find love – and perhaps scoop the eventual $100,000 prize for the winning couple.

Among the line-up are twin brothers Kaz and Kieran from London, Seattle brother and sister pair Joey and Corrina, brothers Chris and Jason from New Jersey and London sisters Diana and Nina.

Can they be each other’s ultimate wingman, or will the weirdness of flirting up a storm while being watched by your sibling prove the ultimate passion killer?

Okay, yes, the siblings twist does feel a little gimmicky – you can easily imagine the 10-episode show being brainstormed into existence by telly bosses desperate to cash in on Love Island’s continuing success.

But there’s more than enough intrigue and friction created by the family dynamic to promise plenty of gripping entertainment.

“Is this about to be the most awkward dating show in history?” asks host Melinda Berry at the start of the first episode.

There’s only one way to find out.

Available Friday, September 2

Redemption – All4

Anyone still mourning the end of Gomorrah needs to check out this equally gritty – and by that we mean equally violent – Italian crime drama produced by the same creative team.

Golden Globe winner Alessandro Gassman stars as grizzled ex-cop Valerio, whose quiet life is turned on its head by the death of his estranged son.

While many believe the death to be suicide, stubborn police officer Sara (Maya Sansa) isn’t so sure and sets out to discover the truth, aided by troubled Valerio.

I Came By – Netflix

But when he breaks into the home of respected judge Sir Hector Blake (Hugh Bonneville), he stumbles upon a sinister secret in Blake’s basement, setting off a chain of events that leaves his loved ones in terrible danger.

Prepare for scares and shocks galore in this tense and terrifying thriller.

Also stars Kelly Macdonald, Percelle Ascott and Varada Sethu.

I Am A Killer – Netflix

The acclaimed and grimly fascinating series is back for a third run, meeting another selection of convicted murderers who are on Death Row or facing a lifetime behind bars.

As before, the six-part series won’t make for easy viewing – after all, each episode speaks candidly to the inmates and explores their terrible crimes in detail – but as a glimpse into the mind of a killer, as well as the shattered lives of the victims’ families and the workings of the prison system, it’s affecting and chilling in equal measure.

Available Tuesday, August 30

Love Rats – Paramount+

It’s a tale as old as time: you meet someone completely amazing, fall head over heels, look forward to a long life together and then – shock horror – they turn out to be a total wrong’un.

This eight-part series tells the heartbreaking true stories of some of the worst love rats the dating world has ever witnessed, including online scam artists and swindling serial con men, husbands with double lives and cold-hearted catfish.

Features interviews with broken-hearted victims and stories so outrageous they’ll make your blood boil.

The first four episodes drop this Thursday, and then weekly.

Available Thursday, September 1
