The hit BBC One drama, which is an adaptation of JK Rowling’s Strike series, will return once again as fans get to see the detective tackle a new case. Going back to solve a crime from the 1970s, Cormoran (Tom Burke) and Robin Ellacott (Holliday Grainger) have a challenge on their hands. However, the new series will see the leading actor’s mother, Anna Calder-Marshall, join the cast.
After two years, fans of the BBC drama are in for a treat as Cormoran and Robin about to solve another case in the new series titled Strike: Troubled Blood.
Going back to Cornwall to visit his family, Cormoran is approached by a woman who asks for his help.
Wanting to try and find her mother, who vanished 40 years ago, the detective is about to take on his first ever cold case with his sidekick’s help along the way.
With the new series centering around a missing mother, actor Tom Burke detailed what it was like working with his real-life mum, Anna Calder-Marshall, on set who joined the cast for the Troubled Blood instalment.
Speaking to Radio Times, the 41-year-old said that while they were shooting together, he came down with a bug and was thankful that his mum was on hand.
He said: “Inevitably during a four-month shoot you’ll be hit with the lurgy and our scenes happened to coincide with the day when I was suffering.
“It was nice to have that extra little bit of sympathy than I normally would have had.
Although it’s not been revealed who Anna Calder-Marshall will be playing in the show, the series will also see actor Daniel Peacock and Ruth Sheen make an appearance.
Over the series, viewers have watched tensions between Robin and Cormoran rise as many fans are eager for the duo to end up together.
Although the detective has always been firm on them remaining friends, Tom teased people could see something develop in Troubled Blood.
The actor added that as Cormoran is around his terminally ill aunt Joan in the series, it makes him have a new perspective on life,
He added: “To be around a dying relative, and the finiteness of life, means he does start to feel much more open to the idea of something more.
“He’s more emotionally vulnerable than he has been in the series.”
Adding to the potential romance between Cormoran and Robin, actress Holiday Grainger said that with her character free from her past relationship with Matthew, she’s autonomous.
The 34-year-old said: “That changes how she lets herself feel about Strike; there’s no barrier to their friendship.”
Grainger added that she thinks Cormoran and Robin see themselves in one another slightly which is part of why they understand the other’s vulnerabilities.
An official synopsis for Strike: Troubled Blood reads: “Strike’s never tackled a cold case before let alone one 40 years old, but despite the slim chance of success, he’s intrigued and takes it on, adding to the long list of cases that he and his partner in the agency Robin Ellacott are currently working on.
“Robin herself is also juggling a messy divorce and unwanted male attention as well as battling her own feelings about Strike.
“As Strike and Robin investigate Margot’s disappearance, they come up against a fiendishly complex case with a psychopathic serial killer and witnesses who cannot all be trusted. They learn that even cases decades old can prove to be deadly.”
Strike: Troubled Blood airs on BBC One on Sunday 11 December at 9pm.
