Kenny Doughty’s Vera co-star Brenda Blethyn didn’t address his departure when he announced it last week. However, she recently replied to one fan on Twitter, who quizzed the DCI Stanhope star on who could be replacing Aiden Healy. Aiden joined the ITV series in 2014 when he replaced Vera’s original sidekick Joe Ashworth (played by David Leon). However, last week, the actor shared why he had made the decision to leave the detective drama.

In response to one of Brenda’s tweets, Twitter user @SMiller47655150 penned: “But please, Ms Blethyn, put me and millions of others out of our misery… Will you be doing another series of Vera? Hoping and praying that the answer is Yes!”

The actress simply replied to her fan: “Yes!”

@VikkiUnwin was also quick to respond as she shared: “That’s fab news but have to say that I’m devastated that @kennydoughty isn’t returning…..Whoever replaces him they have big boots to fill Kenny will be missed xx.” (sic)

Brenda didn’t reveal who would be replacing Kenny, but she did tease fans with a cryptic reply.

She said: “I promise you won’t be disappointed.”

Brenda’s followers were thrilled over the news and were quick to reply in her Twitter thread with their theories about Aiden’s replacement.

@ExternalValidi1 said: “Kenny will be missed. But you Brenda ARE Vera! Without you, there is no Vera! I would be happy if Ibinabo Jack became your sidekick.

“Am sure I’ll be fine w/ the choice. I just want Vera to keep going on w new series. Would prefer at least 6 episodes even if reduced to 1 hour long!” (sic)

Will Vigar tweeted: “To be honest, I’d really like to see DC Mark promoted. I reckon you’d bounce off each other nicely (in the nicest possible way, of course).” (sic)

While @victimsvoice73 added: “@BrendaBlethyn It would be nice if Joe returned xxxx will miss Kenny.”

@Tyra_Oldham commented: “It was a big change when David Leon left. He was great. I am sure it will be a great choice to replace @kennydoughty. I just love the show.”

Kenny may have decided to leave the ITV series, but fans will be able to see him alongside DCI Stanhope one last time.

ITV bosses have confirmed to Express.co.uk a new feature-length episode will be released later this year.

The episode titled, The Rising Tide, which is based on the eleventh Vera novel written by Ann Cleeves, will feature Kenny alongside Brenda.

A spokesperson went on to explain more details about the series will be released very soon.

Last week, Kenny took to his Instagram account to confirm he was leaving the show.

Along with a series of photos from on set with Brenda, Kenny wrote: “After 8 years & 35 Vera films I’ve made the difficult decision of handing over DS Healy’s badge. I can confirm I am leaving Vera.

“I want to thank everyone who’s made this amazing time so joyous, ITV, Silverprint, all the brilliant cast and crew BUT of course my buddy & inspiration Brenda Blethyn. The perfect leading star who I owe so much to. I feel lucky to have you as a friend, you make me howl with laughter & have been a rock for me over the years. I can’t thank you enough. Precious times.”

He concluded: “And finally the Vera fans: without you and your support I would never have made so many films. You really are the best fans in the world. Thank you so much for your loyalty & love for the show. X” (sic)
