Vulnerable Jean causes concern in EastEnders as she throws herself into a party
The upcoming stag and hen parties on EastEnders for Kat (Jessie Wallace) and Phil (Steve McFadden)’s upcoming wedding give Shirley (Linda Henry) concern, when her friend Jean Slater (Gillian Wright) throws herself into the festivities.
Jean has recently returned to Albert Square after some time away as her mental health deteriorated badly and she became seriously ill, leading to a spell in hospital.
Jean’s behaviour in the lead-up to this was marked by very extrovert, uninhibited behaviour. She threw herself into situations like jumping on the kids’ bouncy castle with no regard to safety. Shirley was witness to her shoplifting and other worrying behaviour. Things culminated in Jean trying to walk into the sea in her wedding dress, only being rescued at the last minute by Stacey (Lacey Turner).
In the light of all this, Shirley is worried when Jean seems to be displaying the kind of impetuous behaviour at the hen and stag celebrations that she showed as her illness took hold previously.

Jean protests that Shirley is patronising her, and she doesn’t need to be treated like a child.
Is Shirley being over-protective, or is she right to be worried?
