John Dutton’s (played by Kevin Costner) late wife Evelyn (Gretchen Mol) has just appeared in two episodes of Yellowstone so far, but she has still managed to make a huge impact on the epic Western drama. As season five of the hit Paramount Network series reveals more about the earlier lives of the Duttons, Josh Lucas, who portrays a younger iteration of the ruthless ranch owner, has teased even more to come.
Young John Dutton star Josh has revealed he eventually wants Gretchen to reprise her role as his late wife Evelyn.
Gretchen has made two brief appearances so far and was revealed to have been tragically killed in a horse-riding accident involving Evelyn and John’s daughter, Beth (Kelly Reilly).
This season, showrunner Taylor Sheridan has delved further than ever before into the Duttons’ earlier years, with Josh and Kylie Rogers as younger versions of John and Beth.
“I’m as fascinated as any fan to understand the dynamic between Beth and her mum,” Josh revealed.
“And to see and be able to play the story of Beth and her dad and how the death of her mom makes her so angry and so heartbroken and so damaged that she becomes sexualized the way that she does.
“She tries to drive her father crazy and dress the way that she does and flirts with the cowboys and causes problems. All of it’s coming from this inner turmoil that she has.”
Season five has further explored the early romance between Beth and ranch manager Cole Hauser (Rip Wheeler), portrayed in flashbacks by Kyle Red Silverstein.
However, fans have still been left wondering how John and Evelyn first met, and what their relationship was like before the Dutton family was struck by an unexpected tragedy.
Thankfully, Josh seems optimistic the series will eventually bring back Gretchen for more flashbacks.
“I yearn for all of it,” he told TV Insider. “I hope they bring Gretchen back.
“Because I think when you see young John with his wife, that family was much happier.
“They were a nuclear family. They had this incredible ranch and this lifestyle.”

“Her death is so seminal in the things that caused the pain and destruction within this family. I would love scenes where you see them together and the family in a happier time.”
Unfortunately, if Gretchen is indeed coming back for season five, Josh is keeping the secret close to his chest.
His comments seem to indicate the actress hasn’t been called back so far, so for now it seems unlikely Evelyn will be back before season six.
Actress Gretchen is currently starring with Jon Bernthal in the Showtime drama American Gigolo, the production of which may have made her unavailable to return to Yellowstone.
Even so, Josh has confirmed there will be even more revealing flashbacks as the Dutton saga progresses over the coming weeks.
He teased: “Taylor’s gonna tell the story through young John of what the brand means and what is the whole story of the brand.
“That’s something I think he told me five years ago that he was gonna do. And now here it comes and it’s amazing.”
Plus, the hit Western franchise is set to go back in time even further, with Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren’s Jacob and Cara Dutton debuting in 1923 later this week.
Yellowstone season 5 continues Sundays on the Paramount Network and the following Monday on Paramount+.
