Longstanding hosts of This Morning Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby have returned to present the hit ITV daytime show amid rumours of an off-screen rift between the pair.

Last week a source told The Sun that the pair were “putting on smiles” for the show amid “tensions”.

They told the publication: “This has been brewing quietly for some time, but now it’s all out in the open and people are talking about it. There is no getting past it.”

Holly and Phil are allegedly set to continue their presenting duties together until late July before taking their summer break. ITV will reportedly hold talks on how they can move forward before September. 

The pair have presented This Morning together for 14 years but a new Express.co.uk poll has shown that readers think their time is up.

In a poll that ran from 10.45am on Monday, May 15, to 10.45am on Tuesday, May 16, Express.co.uk asked readers: “Who do you want to stay on This Morning after Holly and Phil ‘rift’?”

Overall, 1,143 votes were received with the vast majority, 61 percent (693 people) answering “neither”.

Some 28 percent (325 people) said “Holly” compared to two percent (28 people) who said “Phil”. A further seven percent (79 people) said “both” while two percent (18 people) said they did not know.

Insiders claim that replacement hosts for the show are already being lined up amid speculation that Holly and Phil’s last show could be in a matter of weeks.

TV insiders have claimed that the show could adopt a rotation of co-presenters in a set up similar to Good Morning Britain. 

A source told The Sun: “There are so many hugely popular stars who fit well with Holly, from Alison [Hammond] and Josie Gibson to Vernon Kay and Rylan Clark. A shake-up could really freshen up the format.”

Friday’s regular presenters Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary are among the favourites to step up, alongside stand-in duos Vernon Kay and Rochelle Humes, and Craig Doyle and Josie Gibson. Some fans have also called for Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford to return to the show.
