Slumdog billionaires! Indian artist uses AI to generate images of the world’s wealthiest and most recognized people – from Bill Gates to Donald Trump – to reimagine what they would look like if they were poor

  • The startling AI images were created by artist Gokul Pillai of Mysore, India

An artist has used artificial intelligence to generate images of some of the world’s wealthiest people – dressed in rags and pictured in a slum – reimagining what they would look like if they were poor.

The startling images created by Indian artist Gokul Pillai shows portraits of Donald Trump, Elon Musk, Muskesh Ambani, Mark Zuckerberg, Warren Buffet, Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos as ‘slumdog billionaires.’ 

Pillai told DailyMail.com that he used the AI-program Midjourney to create the eye-opening portraits and made some minor changes using photoshop. The images took about two days to create. 

His inspiration, he said, came from the classic Indian movie ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ that he rewatched. ‘It was very coincidental. The movie is set in the slums of India and I wanted to recreate something based on that,’ Pillai said. 

The word ‘millionaire’ in the movie title and juxtapositioning it with actual billionaires, that’s how it started.’

Elon Musk, 51, founder, CEO and chief engineer of SpaceX, CEO of Tesla, Inc., owner and CEO of Twitter, and a number of other enterprises has an estimated net worth of around $192 billion as of March 2023, primarily from his ownership stakes in Tesla and SpaceX.

In the photo collage, American business magnate and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, 67, is seen bare-chested and wearing only a grey loin standing outside a shanty.

The post of Gates, whose estimated net worth is $116 billion and fourth-richest person in the world, according to Bloomberg News, has garnered more than 10,000 likes.

The 45th Former President Donald Trump, 76, is seen guant, disheveled and with a smug expression.

In the photo, he is dressed in a washed out oversized tank top, dirty shorts and his trademark yellow hair is outgrown and wild. 

Indian billionaire businessman Mukesh Ambani, 65, heir to the fortune of Reliance Industries, and whose net worth is an estimated $84.2 billion, as per Forbes, is seen wearing a dirty oversized T-shirt and blue trousers, standing next to a garbage dump.

Pillai posted the AI-generated images on Friday asking: ‘Did I miss to include anyone in the list?’ 

The images have since gone viral creating a social media storm with one viewer commenting, ‘This is epic.’ 

Pillai, who resides in Mysore, India, and has more than 36,000 followers on his Instagram told DailyMail.com that he was ‘completely overwhelmed with the response.’  

‘I knew it would be funny and few might find it hilarious too. But the response I received was unprecedented! …  so happy,’ he said with a smiley face emoji.

When asked which AI image was the most popular, he said, ‘Probably Bill Gates. It’s hard to say.

But added, that Mukesh Ambani, according to the feedback he received,  ‘looked the poorest!’

The Tesla owner and CEO of Twitter, is ranked second-wealthies person in the world.

While Billioniare Jeff Bezos, founder and former CEO of Amazon, and Blue Origin is and third wealthiest person in the world, is seen in joggers and sleeveless T-shirt, a stark contrast from his typical posh appearance. 

As of April, Bezos’ net worth is an estimated $125 billion, according to Bloomberg’s Billionaire Index and Forbes.

Additional AI-generated images include 92-year-old Warren Buffet, whose estimated worth as of March was $104 billion, as per Forbes, wearing a white T-shirt with dirt stained and unzipped trousers. 

The American businessman and investor is currently the chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway and the fifth richest person in the world.

Zuckerberg, who became the world’s youngest self-made billionaire at age 23, net worth is $77.1 billion, according to the Forbes Real Time Billionaires making him the 15th richest person in the world.

The drama Slumdog Millionaire is a story that revolves around an 18-year-old boy named Jamal Malik, played by Dev Patel.

Malik is from the slums of Mumbai, who is s contestant on the Indian-Hindi version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. 

Mailk is able to answer every question correctly but is accused of cheating and recounts his story to police of how his answers were precise. 

The film won eight Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. It won seven BAFTA Awards including Best Film, five Critics’ Choice Awards and four Golden Globes.
