Bloodied Open spectator clattered by Spain’s Jon Rahm’s wayward teeshot attended to on ground as golf star apologises
- The accident occurred days after Rahm joked golf balls could be ‘dangerous’
A golf fan had to be attended to on the ground by medical staff after Jon Rahm’s wayward teeshot clattered him in the face leaving him bloodied.
Spectators were seen crouched down next to him as he lay dazed on the ground, with one pouring water over his temple wound after the world number three sprayed his shot on the 12th wide.
Spaniard Rahm made his way over to the fan, who was visiting the 151st Open in Liverpool, to apologise.
However by the time he had got there the spectator was already receiving treatment.
He spent a few minutes conversing with the floored fan.

The Ryder Cup star could be heard asking the fan ‘how are you?’ before he humorously replied with: ‘Okay, how’s your lie?’.
‘It’s terrible’ Rahm said in response.
Rahm offered the spectator a signed glove before continuing his round.
To add a further blow to the Masters Champion, after striking the fan, the ball ricocheted off into a nearby bunker.
This left him with no option but to play out back towards the tee where the mishap had occurred.
Rahm’s bad luck continued as he could only bogey the 442-yard-par four leaving him one over.
Ironically, when asked what he would if protestors disrupted this year’s competition on Thursday, he joked that golf balls can be ‘dangerous projectiles’.
There have been concerns over threats from Just Stop Oil over a possible invasion onto the green.
Players participating in the tournament at the Royal Liverpool course were warned to not take the law into their own hands in the case of a protest.

However Rahm claimed he’d ‘not read the memo’ before four day tournament.
‘I do have a reputation, so I hope they don’t catch me on a bad hole,’ he joked.
‘They might have more room to run around and do what they need to do, but what I can assure you is you don’t want to get hit by a golf ball.’
‘Whether it’s on purpose or even by accident, you don’t want to be caught in the middle of that.’
The injured fan will likely agree with this sentiment.
