Boeing 787 passengers 'screamed and vomited in terror' as packed jet plunged 1,000ft towards sea in horror near-disaster | The Sun

PASSENGERS reportedly screamed in terror and vomited as their plane dropped 1000 feet, witnesses have said.

The Qatar Airways flight came within a harrowing 850 feet of the waters next to the airport it took off from.

The flight took off from Hamad International Airport on January 10 at 2am, bound for Denmark.

Air traffic controller Lucas Andersson was on the flight with his wife and two sons when the plane dropped.

Lucas told MailOnline: “After around 70 seconds into the flight and from out of nowhere there’s this loud sound as the plane goes from pitch up to very much pitch down."

Lucas and his terrified family prepared themselves for the worst as the packed flight around them cried out.

One passenger reportedly vomited from the sudden drop in pressure.

Lucas continued: “Being in the aviation industry, I know how critical the departure phase is and descending with such a high rate at that altitude is never a good thing.

"It was very scary. It was a feeling of the plane being thrown towards the ground."

The plane regained altitude quickly after the scary incident, but those onboard were reportedly not given an explanation for the drop in altitude.

Lucas recalled: "This is one of the things that at the time of the incident was really upsetting. Not a single word from the cockpit afterwards, so people confronted the flight attendants instead, who just said that everything was normal and we flew through some unexpected weather.

"Most likely they did not know what happened either and just tried to calm people down."

Qatar Airways has launched an investigation after passengers reported the near-crash.

Recent reports have revealed the first officer in control of the plane lost 1000 feet in elevation within 24 seconds.

The officer was reportedly flying manually without directions from the automated "flight director".

The first pilot suffered from "lost situational awareness", resulting in a quick descent which "exceeded the flap speed limit"

The aircraft continued its journey to Copenhagen after the terrifying instance.

Qatar Airways told MailOnline that the incident was reported to the authorities immediately, and the popular airline released a statement.

They said: "Qatar Airways is aware of an event relating to flight QR161 operating Doha to Copenhagen on January 10, 2023.

"It was immediately reported to authorities and an internal investigation is being carried out.
