Boris Johnson looked very different during his first speech as Prime Minister

Boris Johnson has stepped down as Conservative Party leader after a string of mass resignations made his already precarious position unsustainable.

Addressing the public today, the Prime Minister looked sullen and tired as he expressed sadness at giving up "the best job in the world".

Wearing a navy blue suit and patterned tie, he revealed plans to serve as PM until a new successor is brought in the autumn.

It's a stark contrast to BoJo's first speech as PM back on July 24, 2019.

Less than three years ago, Johnson wore a similar smart suit, crisp white shirt and blue tie as he promised to "restore trust in democracy" and "prepare for a post-Brexit future".

His signature blonde locks weren't as wild as they looked today, nor did he have dark circles under his eyes.

BoJo had plenty of obstacles to deal with during his two years and 348 days in charge of the nation – from the pandemic to Partygate.

But it was Johnson's decision to promote ally Chris Pincher to deputy chief whip that proved the final nail in the coffin.

The PM approved the appointment despite widespread allegations of inappropriate behaviour.

Johnson claimed he was unaware of the complaints but was accused of dishonesty – as it was shown he was told about allegations numerous times.

High-profile Tories Rishi Sunak and Sajid Javid resigned from their positions this week, which sparked a flurry of resignations.

More than 50 quit on BoJo in less than 48 hours – more ministerial resignations than any PM in modern history.

So with all this being said, it's no wonder he's looking worse for wear today.

Johnson isn’t the only politician to change over the years – take a look back at other transformations below.

Theresa May

Theresa May broke down in tears as she resigned as Prime Minister on July 24, 2019.

Clad in a bright red suit, she looked dejected and exhausted as she delivered her final speech from 10 Downing Street.

The 65-year-old’s turbulent Conservative Party leadership undoubtedly took a toll on her appearance.

She looks dramatically different from the bright-eyed woman who was announced as PM in July 2016.

Just three years before, May smiled as she addressed the British public for the first time as PM in a Thatcher-like navy suit.

David Cameron

David Cameron sported similar suits for his first and last speeches – although his appearance was very different.

In 2010, he stood tall as he addressed the British public.

Contrastingly, he looked much more sullen following his resignation in 2016.

Tony Blair

Further proof that being PM can cause your appearance to deteriorate comes in the shape of Tony Blair.

But as the Labour leader sat in No.10 for a decade, it’s no surprise he was less fresh-faced when his term ended.
