Budget airline plane engine EXPLODES in mid-air sending flames spitting through the air leaving passengers horrified | The Sun

A ROUTINE internal flight across Mexico ended in drama as an engine exploded mid-air and passengers were left fearing for their lives.

The terrifying footage captures the moment that the Airbus A320's right engine blows up and releases a sheet of flames towards the tail as the plane begins to shudder.

The Viva Aerobus flight had only just taken off for an internal Mexican journey when the sky-high explosion occurred on April 19.

The chilling footage, that was uploaded to social media, is shot through a window by a passenger on the budget carrier's flight from Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara.

The video shows the twin-engined plane flying over sea before it's starboard engine suddenly explodes, sending a trail of smoke and flames backwards.

The plane is rocked by the blast and it shudders in mid-air before the footage ends.

The pilots were forced to make an emergency landing at Puerto Vallarta airport where the unharmed passengers were put on a replacement flight, according to local media.

The airline – which is owned by a Mexican bus company – said the drama was dealt with by their pilots.

They added: "According to the protocols established for this type of situation and as a precautionary measure, with the safety of all passengers as a priority, the crew proceeded to return the aircraft to the Puerto Vallarta International Airport and landed successfully at 4:29 p.m., without any mishap."

They went on: "After landing, the passengers were disembarked in a timely manner and the aircraft was taken in for inspection and maintenance.

"We regret the inconvenience that this circumstance may have caused and we reaffirm our commitment to safety on each of the flights, the company's number one priority," they added.

In August 2022, passengers captured the moment that another Viva Arebus flight suffered a mid-air explosion on a flight from Mexico to Los Angeles.

In a strikingly similar situation, terrified passengers watched as the engine blew up soon after take-off and a sheet of flames were flung backwards.

The pilots turned the plane around for an emergency landing. There were no injuries reported.
