Chained up woman rescued from mum’s metal cell where she was caged for 20 years

A woman has been rescued after police found her chained up in a metal cell in her mum's house where she had been held captive for 20 years.

Rosinalva da Silva, 39, was discovered in a bedroom in the property in Espírito Santo, Brazil, on Thursday (February 9), with her feet chained up and her hands tied.

Police had to walk through a metal door to find the woman in a dark, dingy makeshift cell, lit only by a single glass window.

Officers quickly noted Ms da Silva was dehydrated and hungry when they found her and escorted her out of the property holding the chain she had been bound by.

She was immediately rushed to a local hospital but was later transferred to the larger Regional Hospital, where she is receiving treatment for severe malnutrition and remains under observation by medical staff.

She was also subjected to other medical exams to determine whether she had other complications as a result of her mistreatment, especially due to the length of time she had gone without sufficient amounts of food.

Civil Police chief Carlos Braga revealed Ms da Silva's mother, who has not been named, had evidently been drinking when officers raided the house and arrested her.

A man, who has also not been named, was also arrested in connection to the incident.

It is thought the victim's mother kept her locked up inside her home after the woman began suffering from mental illness following the loss of two children several years ago.

Police say Ms da Silva started experiencing psychological distress and had violent outbursts and displays of aggression, leading her mother to believe the "only way" to control her was to lock her up in the dingy room.

Inquiries are ongoing and authorities are investigating whether other people were also involved.
