Coronation weekend could end in washout as Met Office warns of thunder
UK weather: Met Office forecasts colder conditions
The Met Office has warned conditions could become “thundery” over the Coronation weekend. With the King’s Coronation only 10 days away, revellers may be disappointed to hear that “increasingly unsettled” weather may dampen spirits on the historic event. However, temperatures are set to linger above average when the sun does make an appearance.
Forecasters have warned that despite the joyous day, gloomy weather conditions are set to prevail all across the country.
Netweather Senior Forecaster Nick Finnis said: “For Sunday May 7 and Monday 8, we see unsettled conditions taking over, as Atlantic troughing/ low pressure extends east across the British Isles.
“So we could be looking at an increasingly unsettled Coronation Weekend.
“But let’s hope the King’s Coronation Day will not be as inclement as the late Queen Elizabeth’s Coronation day back on June 2 1953.
“Unfortunately that day the weather was atrocious.”
The Met Office added that heavy rainfall is expected in certain areas, with parts of the UK experiencing thundery downpours.
The meteorological service said: “Frontal zones may bring some rain and low cloud especially in the west, but their remnants are more likely to become a focus for showers as they spread across the country.
“Some of these potentially heavy and thundery.”

Meanwhile, the Early May Bank Holiday is expected to bring warmer weather across England and Wales, with light winds and the possibility of scattered showers in northern and western areas on Saturday which will potentially become more widespread on Sunday, mainly affecting the southern regions on Monday.
However, when the sun does shine, it will bring a warm and pleasant feeling, with temperatures reaching the mid-to-high teens throughout the weekend, Netweather said.
Saturday will likely be the warmest day for Scotland, except for the far north, while cooler conditions will prevail in the south on Sunday and Monday.
