Costwolds plane crash sees three rushed to hospital as ‘pilot overshoots runway’

Two passengers and a pilot have been rushed to hospital following a horror plane crash at Cotswold Airport today (August 4).

The incident which happened this morning is already being investigated by the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB).

It's thought the aircraft overshot the runway and ended up in a ditch on the A429 forcing passengers to 'self rescue' themselves before authorities arrived.

Emergency services remain at the scene and the A429 near Kemble has been closed in both directions as investigations take place.

WiltshireLive reports that police say there have been no deaths or serious injuries.

Wilts Specialist Ops Tweeted at 12.48pm: "RPU are currently managing the scene of an injury air craft collision at Kemble airfield with @RWBassettPolice. The A429 is currently closed at the scene and will be for the foreseeable. Motorists to follow diversions.

The team also tweeted dramatic pictures from the scene, one of which showed the aircraft in the ditch it came to a stop in.

Another picture from the scene showed police stationed in the road next to the airport.

A further update from police confirmed three people had been taken to hospital as a precaution. No serious injuries or deaths have been reported.

A police spokesperson said: "Shortly after 10.30am today, we responded to reports of a light aircraft which appeared to have overshot the runway at Cotswold Airport, ending up in a ditch beside the A429. There were no reported deaths or serious injuries. The pilot and two passengers have been taken to hospital as a precaution.

"The Air Accident Investigation Branch has been informed. The road is likely to be closed for a number of hours to allow the removal of fuel and debris."

Multiple Dorset and Wiltshire fire and rescue crews were also sent to the scene at around 10.41am this morning.

A spokesperson reports that casualties had "self-rescued" prior to the fire brigades arrival. The incident has since been scaled back and one crew from Stratton remain at the scene for the arrival of AAIB for aircraft recovery.
