Covid fears rise with 100m China tourists to fly as flight searches rise 10-fold

Raging Covid infections could break out again with more than 100million travellers from China set to fly abroad.

Borders securities are either tightening entry restrictions or considering it now Chinese tourists have been given the green light to travel.

The US has become the latest country to impose mandatory Covid tests on visitors from China.

Travel agents in China have reported a 10-fold increase in people wanting to leave the country – after being deprived of seeing friends, family or taking holidays, according to the BBC.

Before the pandemic struck more than 155million tourists travelled from Chinese ports across the country and globe, according to Statista, as similar numbers will be expected to travel again.

China announced it would ease its restrictions on travel to and from the country from January 8.

But Covid has spread ferociously in the wake of restrictions being lifted – and it is feared infections could spike in countries welcoming travellers from China.

Some have expressed concern online about borders reopening as Covid cases peak.

One well-liked comment on Chinese social media site Weibo said: "Why can't we wait until this wave passes to open up? The medical workers are already worn out, and old people won't survive two infections in one month."

Reports say Chinese hospitals are overwhelmed and elderly people are dying.

Tighter measures have also been brought in by Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Taiwan and India.

Covid-19's origins can be traced back to a market in Wuhan, the sprawling capital of Central China’s Hubei province.

Since that first outbreak, China has officially recorded 5,245 Covid-related deaths.

It is currently estimated that the country has more than 52,000 active cases, with 1,260 of those considered serious or critical.

In the UK, the total number of deaths where Covid-19 is mentioned as a cause on the death certificates stood at 210,837, as of December 9, 2022.
