DAVID MARCUS: There is anarchy in the USA

ANARCHY in the USA: $100 BILLION a year stolen by brazen shoplifters. Dystopian stores locking away their goods. Police invisible. DAVID MARCUS asks: Is this the lawless America we really want?

There is anarchy in the USA.

More and more, Americans are living every day in a dystopia that just a few years ago would have been utterly unimaginable.

From major cities to the border, and even in some suburbs, the rule of law is now all but meaningless, with hard-working families left to pay the price in blood and treasure.

The America we grew up in – of bright shopping malls that weren’t attacked by thieving mobs, of gas stations where carjacking wasn’t commonplace, and of public transport that didn’t double as a homeless shelter – is vanishing.

Last week came the sobering figure that our country now has $100 billion-a-year shoplifting habit.

One hundred billion dollars. The annual budget for the entire state of Maryland is a mere $65 billion.

And this is money that, according to the National Retail Federation, stores are never getting back. As brazen crooks stuff backpacks full of goods unchallenged, the police – cripplingly over-stretched – will likely never even turn up.

Small and large businesses alike are being crushed, while the vast sums of lost revenue are passed on to consumers in prices hikes, just as inflation and rising interest rates punish earners.

On Tuesday, a Chicago-based branch of Walgreens debuted a new ‘anti-theft’ design in which just only aisles contain actual products for consumers to place in their baskets freely. Everything else must be ordered at a counter.

This is just the latest escalation in what has been playing out up and down the nation for months, with stores from Target to CVS locking items of negligible value behind infantilizing glass shutters.

Like kids in kindergarten, we now must ask our minders for permission to view the toothpastes and the deodorants.

While elsewhere, stores are shutting up shop entirely – unable to fend off thieves with even the most extreme of measures.

In the rare instances criminals are apprehended, George Soros-backed district attorneys simply ignore them, preferring instead to pursue trumped-up charges and phony indictments to further social justice.

Indeed, things are particularly bad in Democrat-run cities.

Chicago, New York, San Fransisco. Once great bastions of American prosperity, reduced to fentanyl-addled, rat-infested hellholes, as their ultra-liberal leaders waste cash on woke policies, decriminalize hard drugs and use their podiums to lecture us on transgender injustice.

The $6 million advertising campaign featuring a drag queen launched by San Fransisco this week in a desperate bid to lure tourists back to the suffering city said it all.

Meanwhile, the pandemic-era ‘Title 42’ migrant deportation policy was mothballed by President Joe Biden less than a month ago, but already over half of the hotel rooms in New York City, a former tourist mecca, are filled with migrants shipped from the border. They’re crossing in their thousands daily.

Yet at the same time, Biden and his acolytes celebrate the passing of a debt-ceiling suspension deal that will see national debt rise to an eye-watering $35 trillion.

Our homes and our financial security are no longer our own. And this Administration cannot be trusted to lead.

For at every turn, at every moment now, once normal, traditional, pleasant aspects of American life are being crushed out like cigarettes beneath the Birkenstocks of progressive government.

But are we just meant to put up and shut up?

Are normal, honest men and women supposed to simply accept that they’re now picking up the cheque for all this incompetence?

Business tycoon James Crown – worth an estimated $10.2 billion – pledged last week to help make Chicago ‘the safest big city in America’, using his own money and that of other generous philanthropists.

In the year to March 2023, Chicago suffered a 47 per cent rise in crime, with sexual assaults and robbery making up most of the increase.

But a functional society cannot rely on charity.

People are crying out for good governance. And as Republicans gear up for 2024, no matter who the nominee may be, this great depressing American decline must be the central issue.

Otherwise, we risk losing everything.
