A duck which was found swimming around with a knife lodged in its neck after being stabbed by cruel thugs in France has made an astonishing full recovery.

Shocking footage showed the mallard swimming around a pond in Saint-Nolff, Brittany, with other ducks, despite having a red blade wedged in just below its head.

Outraged animal activists have since filed a complaint for animal abuse as they look to seek justice for the horror act which took place last month. 

Somehow, the wild duck seemed completely unfazed by the knife and it was still able to walk, fly and eat despite the severe wound.

Concerns for the animal, which has been dubbed Donald by locals, first arose on March 24, when a walker alerted the welfare charity Pinocchio et Sauvageons 56 to the injury.

Concerns for the animal first arose on March 24, when a walker alerted the welfare charity Pinocchio et Sauvageons 56 to the injury

The shocking discovery prompted the charity, with the assistance of firefighters, to try and save the duck from any further damage by removing the knife.

However, to their surprise, the duck continued to evade them and rescuers were unable to initially catch it, Le Parisien reports.

It took seven days for rescuers to finally capture the duck, when they were eventually able to sedate him and remove the weapon from its neck.

Once the surgery was performed, the duck flew right out of the cage when the door was opened.

The animal charity – and even the mayor of Saint-Nolff, have been providing updates to the duck’s health since – and he seems to have made a full recovery from what could have been a life-changing injury.

Mayor Nadine Le Goff-Carnec Maire shared a montage of photos of the duck being treated by vets and released back into the wild.

She described the rescue mission as a ‘happy ending’ and thanked firefighters for helping to remove the knife and return the duck to the water.

‘As soon as the cage was opened, the duck flew away,’ she added. 

Rescue teams initially struggled to catch the duck but seven days later they were able to sedate him and remove the weapon

‘His behavior was observed on the water. Everything is going well!!! Happy ending for this duck…’

Local authorities are now trying to track down the person responsible for heartlessly stabbing the animal.

Back in 2021, the French Senate adopted a new animal protection bill in a bid to combat shocking abuse.

Within the bill, authorities pledged to clamp down heavier on fines and recommended sentence times for those convicted of animal cruelty.
