Families should IRON wrapping paper to re-use it in cost-cutting drive, minister says
- Families can reuse old wrapping paper by ironing it
- Environment minister Rebecca Pow said the tip could pose a fire risk
- It saves a lot of money and also save a lot of waste for households over Christmas
Families should iron old wrapping paper so it can be reused, a minister has advised.
But the suggestion comes just as the Government has urged people not to do anything risky during the ambulance strike.
Environment minister Rebecca Pow admitted the money-saving tip could pose a fire risk unless the iron is kept on a low setting.
She posted a clip on Twitter showing herself ironing wrapping paper.
Families can save extra money and prevent waste this Christmas by ironing old wrapping paper
Alongside the video was a link to the Environment Agency’s 24 ‘ways to waste not this Christmas’ such as giving eco-friendly or homemade gifts, and making crackers with recyclable paper.
Ms Pow, who is the Minister for Environmental Quality and Resilience, says in the video apparently filmed in her own home: ‘It’s that time of year again. I save all of my old wrapping paper, I drive my children absolutely nuts.
‘But I’ve always done this, I save it in a box, I’ve got it all out now and I’m ironing it and I’m going to use it to wrap this year’s presents.’
She went on: ‘Obviously you need to be really careful – low low, low heat for the iron because one does not want any risk of fire.
‘But it really does work and saves a lot of money but also saves an awful lot of waste.’
