Firefighters hampered by strong winds in Brighton sea front hotel fire

Blaze destroys 200-year-old hotel on Brighton sea front: Dozens of firefighters are hampered by strong winds with residents evacuated from their homes

  • Royal Albion Hotel on Brighton’s sea front on fire since about 5.30pm yesterday
  • Fire service said nobody injured, but people from nearby buildings evacuated

A fire has broken out in a 200-year-old hotel in Brighton as firefighters are struggling to put out the blaze due to heavy winds.

The Royal Albion Hotel has been on fire since last night and due to ‘difficult conditions’, even people from nearby buildings had to be evacuated, according to East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service.

They also said no one has been injured in the blaze.

The ‘significant smoke’ exacerbated by strong winds resulted in the closure of the Old Steine and Kings Road.

Brighton and Hove City Council have opened a rest centre to support people that were evacuated from their homes due to the fire.

This morning the fire service said it would scale back its response, which at some point saw 15 fire engines in use at the scene.

The fire was first reported just before 5.30pm on Saturday.

Councillor Bella Sankey, leader of the council, said: ‘These are very sad scenes in our city this evening.

‘On behalf of the city council I want to give my thanks to the emergency services for attending the fire at the historic Royal Albion Hotel in the heart of our city.

‘We urge everyone to continue following advice from emergency services and to please keep away from the area.’

The regency-style hotel has 219 bedrooms and was built in 1826. The Grade-II listed building has previously suffered a fire in November 1998.
