Four people killed as two planes crash into each other in mid-air over Las Vegas

Four people died after two planes crashed into each other in mid-air above Las Vegas, US, this weekend.

A single-engine Piper PA-46 and a single-engine Cessna 172 collided at around 12pm on Sunday (July 18), according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The North Las Vegas Fire Department confirmed the deaths, with the horror incident taking place at North Las Vegas airport roughly three miles north of downtown Las Vegas.

The two planes collided in the traffic pattern, with FAA officials saying the Piper was preparing to land before it hit the Cessna.

The Cessna fell into a dried up water retention pond, the Piper into a field east of the runway.

The crash remains under investigation by the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

''I can confirm that two planes have crashed resulting in multiple fatalities," North Las Vegas Police Department Public Information Officer Alexander Cuevas told the Daily Mail.

"The NTSB and the FAA have taken over control of the investigation. We are assisting where requested."

The four people who died were everyone that was aboard the two planes, the FAA said.

No one on the ground was injured as a result of the crash.

This comes after a plane transporting 12 tons of "dangerous materials" burst into in flames before crashing with its crew members onboard in Greece.

The aircraft descended to the ground near to Kavala shortly before 11pm local time on Saturday (July 16).

The plane, which is handled by a Ukraine-based air carrier, was carrying eight crew members at the time of the mountainside explosion.

All eight sadly died.

It has been reported that the pilot called for an emergency landing at Kavala International Airport, but that the signal was lost.
