Gang run fake police station in building next to real station for eight months
An Indian gang successfully operated a fake police station for eight months as they extorted money from hundreds of people, according to an official.
Pretending to be police officers or soldiers is an unfortunate common occurrence in India with fear of the police to be a widespread feeling in the nation with corruption said to be high within the police force.
The gang, which is based in Bihar state, showed tremendous gall as they set up their headquarters 500 metres from the home of the genuine police chief of the region.

According to DC Srivastava, to make their operation look as authentic as possible, members of the gang wore uniforms with rank badges as well as carrying guns.
The culprits would make money through illicit activities such as charging local people to enter the fake police station to file complaints and cases.
They had also pocketed extra funds by promising to help various locals secure social housing or jobs in the police.
To further the elaborate scam they had masterminded, they would also pay people from the local area, a daily wage of about 500 rupees (about £5) in order to act as police officers working at the fake station, that was set up in a hotel.

However, the eight-month scam came to an end after a real genuine police officer noticed two members of the gang carrying non service-issued guns that had been manufactured in local workshops.
While the ringleader of the operation remains at large, at least six members of the gang including two women were arrested as DC Srivastava said: “[An] investigation is under way in the case. More information will come to light.”
