A gardener claims he survived on a deserted island in Rio de Janeiro for five days by eating two lemons, charcoal, and drinking sea water before being rescued.
Nelson Nedy was rescued by authorities Saturday after an individual on a jet ski spotted him on the island. The 51-year-old suffered minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital and discharged the same day.
Nedy’s plight began last Monday when he visited Mirador do Roncador, an observation point in Grumari beach.
He was standing on top of a rock looking at the waves and decided to step forward when a bigger wave came crashing down and knocked him into the water.
‘I just hit my butt on the rock. I don’t know if I bounced, if I hit the water, if I sank,’ Nedy to Brazilian news outlet G1. ‘I tried to get away from the (rock) and swam further in.’
Nelson Nedy spent five days stranded on a deserted island in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, before authorities rescued him Saturday. The 51-year-old gardener had gone to watch waves at a Grumari beach when he was knocked out by a wave and thrown into the sea and swept by a current before he washed up on the shore of Palmas Beach. Nedy recalled how he ate two lemons, drank water from two bottles he found as well as from the sea before he was spotted by individuals jet skiing in the area

He recalled how the strong sea current swept him nearly two miles out before he washed up on the shore of the uninhabited Palmas Island.
With nowhere to go, Nedy waited to recover after having lost strength from being in the sea too long.
‘There was nothing there. Nothing to hide in, nothing to take shelter in,’ he said. ‘I had to make a decision to jump in and hunt for another spot.’
He eventually located a cave, where he slept for the night, using a soaked t-shirt to cover his head as temperatures dropped.
Nedy was up early last Tuesday morning and went on a walk to explore the island before it started to rain. He was climbing up the rocks with an old rope that someone had left behind when he suddenly spotted a makeshift tent that had been set up by local fisherman.
At one point he climbed down and found two lemons on the ground and also located two bottles of water.
‘I ate them with the skin and everything so I wouldn’t miss anything,’ he said.
Nedy used a blanket that had been left in the tent to to draw the attention of people on the sands of Grumari beach, but felt hopeless because he was too far away.
At one point attempted to swim to Grumari beach last Wednesday but abandoned it.
‘I reached halfway but the tide pulling me into the sea,’ he said. ‘There was a time when I dropped the body and kept saying, whatever God wants now, he can take me.’
Nedy swam back to the island and on Thursday tried using a piece of styrofoam and plywood door as a board to escape. The current slammed his back against a rock and was forced to return because it was not sturdy enough to maintain his weight.
‘I drank pure salt water,’ he said. ‘There were times when I saved up, I drank a little of the sweet to hide the salt in the water just to wet my mouth.’

On Friday, a hungry Nedy remembered watching monkeys stealing coal for food and since they didn’t fall sick from consuming it, he figured he could eat it too.
‘But it dried out my mouth even more and got stuck in the tooth,’ he said.
By Saturday, Nedy had ran out of the water he had in the two battles and was searching for a way to keep himself hydrated when he saw several people riding jet skis.
He took his t-shirt and waved it at the group.
Nedy was airlifted by a fire department helicopter to a base in Guaratiba before he was transferred to an ambulance and rushed to Lourenço Jorge Hospital in Barra da Tijuca.
