He was forced to open the safe before the thieves loaded a bag full of precious jewels.
The balaclava-wearing thieves then escaped, getting into a getaway car and driving away.
Mr Goonan fled and called for help shortly afterwards.
Both the jeweller and police believed it was a premediated attack.
‘They were right on top of me straight away,’ Mr Goonan told 9 News.
‘I wrestled the guy with the shotgun which is pretty silly, and then the other guy has clocked me over the head with a hammer.

‘Someone had informed them of what’s here and what I’ve got.’
He said they demanded watches and gold bullion after hitting him over the head.
Eventually, they raided his safe and bagged up several precious gemstones, including sapphires, pink diamonds and rubies.
The thieves are still on the run and police are appealing for help from witnesses.
‘It’s premeditated, it’s planned and the actual assault upon the person,’ Superintendent Geoff Sheldon said.
A black ute with stolen plates is understood to have been the car used in the robbery.
