Greggs’ bid to sell sausage rolls 24 hours a day axed due to ‘disorder’ fears

Greggs’ bid to sell sausage rolls 24 hours a day has been axed over fears shops would become all-night crime “hotspots”.

Plans to run the first 24/7 pastries superstore crumbled when police were warned of a potential spike in trouble.

Plans had been submitted to use CCTV and even have a bouncer guarding the flagship store, which will cover 1,500sq ft in Leicester Square in central London.

Describing the plans as “half-baked”, Westminster Council warned a 24/7 bakery could become a “hotspot for social disturbance and anti-social behaviour”.

A Met Police spokesman echoed the fear, saying: “It is our belief that if granted, the application could undermine the licensing objectives in relation to the prevention of crime and disorder.”

Greggs argued opening in the small hours would allow emergency and shift workers to access food.

The new Leicester Square store holds the title of the largest Greggs anywhere in the UK.
