Harry and Meghan ‘have upper hand’ on Charles after eviction row, says source

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have an "upper hand" over King Charles and may not attend his coronation, according to experts.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have received an invitation to the ceremony, taking place on May 6, but it is unclear whether they'll attend after they were evicted from Frogmore Cottage, their royal residence.

But regardless of whether the pair make an appearance or not, they'll still be the centre of attention, a palace insider told Page Six.

"Whatever happens, Harry and Meghan will always be the ones in the headlines," the source said.

"Whether they come or they stay at home in California, they do hold the upper hand."

There has been speculation over whether the former royals will attend the coronation, with concern that the couple could upstage proceedings.

It was previously reported that they would be under strict instructions to talk about "nothing but the weather" during the celebratory weekend if they were to show face.

"They’re on the list and planning is well underway to make sure the proceedings run as smooth as possible – without any drama," a source said. While another chimed in: "They should realise that there is only one subject that many members of the royal family will be willing to discuss and that’s the weather."

Writer and friend of the royals Hugo Vickers told Page Six: "Nothing must deflect from the actual coronation, it’s very important.

"I don’t know if Harry and Meghan will both come [to the coronation], but the message I’m getting is that Charles is concerned about his son and wishes to leave the door open for him."

However, after the duo were "asked to vacate" their home in Windsor, some sources believe they may not attend the ceremony at all.

There had long been speculation that the pair had been asked to move out of their UK residence before their spokesperson confirmed the news on Wednesday (March 1).

They said: "We can confirm The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been requested to vacate their residence at Frogmore Cottage."

Meghan's friend and author of the book Finding Freedom, Omid Scobie, added: "It all feels very final and like a cruel punishment.

"It’s like [the family] want to cut them out of the picture for good.

"It’s news, sources tell me, that has left Harry and Meghan stunned, and at least two members of the Royal Family 'appalled'."

And in light of the reports, bookmakers at William Hill have slashed the odds of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex snubbing Charles' lavish event, with the odds of Harry not attending now at 2/7, down from 11/8 last month.
