Hero teen saved pal from great white shark attack thanks to first aid class

A quick-thinking teen who helped save his friend's life after he was savaged by a great white shark says he owes his skills to a first aid class.

Conner Shirley heroically carried his friend Luke Pascoe 2km across a beach with sharp rocks after the predator latched its teeth into Luke's leg in Australia.

Luke, 17, was spearfishing off Goode Beach, near Mistaken Island, Alban, when he was attacked by the sea beast, which he believes measured around 5m.

"Conner was the one that helped me up onto the rock and he piggybacked me 2km along the rocks back to the car and drove me to hospital," he said.

"I owe my life to him. I was lying in bed last night and I was thinking to myself how lucky I am to still be here."

Conner said he managed to stem Luke's blood loss by making a tourniquet from his dive belt, reports ABC.

"First aid at school actually taught me a couple of things," he explained.

"It mainly started to bleed when I got him out of the water."

Luke said he was unable to feel the pain straight away due to the adrenaline that hit his system.

He endured three lacerations to his lower legs after shooting a fish while diving in 10m-deep water.

But his plan backfired after the sea monster targeted him as he rose to the surface.

The teen said he was "a bit sore" but he knew the risks of diving.

"It's more my fault than the shark's fault," he said.

Despite his ordeal, Luke plans to get back into the water after his rehabilitation.
