Homeowner divides opinion with Union Jack driveway as some praise 'patriot' but others say it'll 'knock £20k off house' | The Sun

A HOMEOWNER has divided opinion with their bold Union Jack driveway, which some people praised as "patriotic" – but others claimed would devalue the house by £20,000

The owner already had the British flag design splashed over their front door window and letterbox, but decided to go one step further by paving their entire front yard with red, white and blue bricks.

A builder shared a video of the work on TikTok – which has quickly racked up a million views, 40,000 likes – and lots of comments.

Coloured paving bricks were laid to create the flag, with the central stripe acting as a pathway leading up to the front door.

The design certainly makes the house stand out – but not everyone is a fan.

Some TikTok users mocked the eye-catching revamp with some even suggesting it would devalue the house – and neighbouring properties.

One said: "That's 20K off the value of the house.

"Good luck selling that."

Another agreed, saying: "One way to bring the house prices down on the street I suppose."

Several viewers said they would be "furious" if they were the homeowner's neighbours, including James Anders, who said: "I’d be taking them to court for devaluing my property if I was living next door."

On the other hand, there were people who appreciated the renovation – with some saying it showed the homeowner's pride in Britain.

A supportive TikToker said: "Very patriotic. We are British so nothing to be ashamed about. Love it."

Those in favour of the landscaping were confused about why there was even a debate.

One user said: "I don't get why people are so pressed. Why is having national pride an issue?"

Another commented: "Why does having a Union Jack driveway, upset people? You all really need to grow up."

Others seemed more concerned about the design's symmetry.

One person asked: "Why would you not square it off at the right and have a pebbledash or something instead of having a giant red line throwing it all off?"

Several users expressed frustration that "It's so uneven"and it sent them into "OCD overdrive."

Some branded the drive "cool" while others called it "embarrassing" and the landscapers who created it have been contacted for comment.

Tony Skinner & Sons Design & Build posted the video yesterday.

Their business says it offers a "wide range of styles and colours",which they have certainly proved with this design.

It's not the first time the UK's flag has sparked controversy.

A patriotic cabbie was furious after being told to remove a Union Jack from his taxi.

And a Gulf War veteran was ordered to remove a Union Jack flag from his own garden.
