Senator Timothy Eugene Scott was born in North Charleston, South Carolina, on September 19, 1965.
The businessman and politician is the Republican party's only African-American senator and one of 11 African-Americans to have served in the U.S. Senate since 1870.
Scott grew up "in a poor, single-parent household," to a mother who worked long hours as a nursing assistant, according to his Senate bio.
He worked his way up through county and state politics before being elected to the House of Representatives in 2010.
