JACI STEPHEN: Godfather co-stars Al Pacino and De Niro are selfish!

JACI STEPHEN: Thought Godfather Part III was bad? This sequel is even worse! Because co-stars Al Pacino and Robert De Niro both choosing to have late-life children is dangerous and selfish

Now that’s what I call an unwanted sequel!

Because, at an impressive 83, Al Pacino looks set to join his former The Godfather II co-star Robert De Niro and become a new dad in late-late life.

Yes, the octogenarian – who has never been married – is expecting a child with his film-producer girlfriend Noor Alfallah, already eight months pregnant and herself only (brace yourself) TWENTY NINE.

And this comes just weeks after we learned De Niro – a younger, sprightlier 79 – has sired a new daughter with partner Tiffany Chen, a 45-year-old martial arts instructor.

Clearly, the decorated actor pair – whose friendship has spanned more than five decades – have never been able to stop competing both on and off screen.

Secure icon status in Hollywood. Check. Win a plethora of glittering Oscars. Check. Cash in the big bucks. Check. Become new dads just when you should be finalizing the details of your wills. Errr – check!

Perhaps their luscious, leggy lovers made them offers they simply couldn’t refuse.

Or perhaps they misplaced their glasses and read the script wrong. But, I’m sorry chaps, godfathers aren’t supposed to be the ones having the kids!

Already dads six and three times over respectively, it’s not like Robert and Al had missed out on the great joys of parenthood.

In fact, their eldest children are fully formed adults of 51 and 33 (incidentally, both slightly older than their respective partners).

Last month, I wrote on DailyMail.com that, in contrast to the gushing celebrations from De Niro’s celeb pals, I found the whole thing rather creepy – and not a little bit sad.

And that’s because the hard reality for geriatric dads like De Niro, and now Pacino, is that they’ll barely live long enough to be remembered by their new babies.

Sure, they can afford a nanny or ten to help with the heavy lifting (De Niro’s worth a reported $500 million; Pacino, $120 million). And sure, maybe there’s something rather sweet about the fact the old pair can take an afternoon nap at the same time as their little ones.

But no fortune, no matter how great, can yet help you live forever.

And as TMZ, who broke the news of Pacino’s imminent baby, wrote on Tuesday: ‘Pacino would be 101, God willing, when the child turns 18.’

Let us not forget, this is a man who likely counts himself lucky to have seen 80 after his struggles with drug and alcohol addiction, which he has since overcome.

This is also a man who has spoken openly about the lasting impact of his own father selfishly abandoning him aged two: ‘It’s the missing link… Having children has helped a lot. I consciously knew that I didn’t want to be like my dad. I wanted to be there.’

Yet, this week, People Magazine lauded Pacino as the latest member of its ludicrously named ‘Hollywood’s Older Dads Club’.

Already dads six and three times over respectively, it’s not like Robert and Al had missed out on the joys of parenthood. In fact, their eldest children are adults of 51 and 33 – incidentally, both slightly older than their respective partners. (Pictured: Pacino, center, with Alfallah, left).

Aside from De Niro, fellow honorees include former F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone, who had his fourth child at 89 – and Mick Jagger, who had his eighth at 73 (and who incidentally also enjoyed a wild fling with Noor Alfallah, the soon-to-be mother to Pacino’s child, in 2017).

Is there something in the LA water? Did I miss the starting gun on the willy waving competition?

Thinking about Robert and Al getting down to business is like imagining The Muppet Show’s Statler and Waldorf in the nude. It’s just wrong.

It’s also rather depressing – for it shines a light on a rather uncomfortable hypocrisy when it comes to the reception of women who become mothers in older age.

Take this comparison for example:

Sex and The City star Kim Cattrall last month on the news of De Niro’s new baby on the eve of his 9th decade: ‘God bless him!’

But what did London-based Professor of Reproductive Science Joyce Harper tell a left-wing UK newspaper after Naomi Campbell dared to have a child – reportedly via surrogate – aged 50?

‘Celebrity pregnancies at advanced ages give women false hope about what is actually possible.’

What the sanctimonious Prof failed to point out, however, is that as men age, the risk of harmful DNA damage in their sperm seriously increases. (And we’re told – not that anyone wanted to know – Pacino’s child was conceived naturally).

Several US Government-backed studies have highlighted higher incidences of autism, schizophrenia and even childhood leukemia in babies of older fathers.

While a 2018 study by Stanford University found that the father’s age can even sway the health of the mother during pregnancy, specifically her risk of developing diabetes. Though, of course, there is no suggestion that either De Niro or Pacino’s babies and partners have suffered medical complications.

Being a parent ‘never gets easier’, De Niro admitted in an interview last month. While Pacino was already complaining some 20 years ago – then aged a youthful 62 – about how tiring newfound fatherhood is: ‘You gotta be in shape, man! I go out to dinner and I’m talking to a very interesting person and I’m falling asleep!’

What’s now changed?

Sometimes, boys, that great idea for a sequel – just like the much-panned Godfather Part III – is best left on the cutting room floor.
